in class the topic of the week has been "home"... that is: rodina, motherland. its pretty intense to discuss, as naturally lots of other issues arise: patriotism, nationalism, what defines "motherland", language, ethnicity, racism... we are specifically discussing russia, but i can't help but think of my own homeland, vermont... one thing expressed by an article, was the idea of patriotism being connected with history: that is, your family's history: that is, that your ancestors are buried in the ground upon which you live, walk, raise your own family. this is where my grandparents are buried, where my friend aaron is buried, where nancy is scattered amongst the flowers.... its intense to connect yourself to a place in that way, but at the same time, it is definately one of the elements that creates the sense of "home"... the eternal connection, the life blood, the remains, the very ground.

i am feeling sentimental, and a little sad... not sad in a depressed way, just... that feeling, when you know things are about to change, and its good, but there is always a sense that you won't really be able to appreciate things as they are now, because they are fleeting, time is fleeting... but i have this beautiful view of mountains out my window, really, its beautiful. its the closest i can come.
