RIP Maggie, 1983-2007

Well, I didn't expect this day to come. My poor old girl, whom I expected to pass quietly in her sleep one day, had her life violently ended today. By me. Maggie, my old Mercedes 380 SE was older than I am, a family heirloom of sorts. My grandfather got her in Belgium as a company car when he worked for Dow Chemical. After bringing her back to the States, she was given to my mom, and from her, it was passed on to me. I always assumed I'd pass it on to my kids, and from them to their kids, on for the next 200 years or so. But, it's not to be.

Today I had my first car accident. Driving home on the long-familiar road after running errands, getting gas, getting groceries, paying bills, a fly buzzed my face and distracted me. I rolled down my window to let it out and got back to driving. The car I'd been well behind was stopped in the middle of the road mere feet ahead. Fuck.

*SCREEEEEEE-BAM*

After regaining my senses, I got out to check on the guy I'd hit. Guys, actually. They were both fine, albeit surprised and shaken. I called the police, they drove their car into a side alley and we pushed mine off onto a driveway. All the antifreeze soaking the road left a slippery green puddle that made it a challenge. The police got there and started doing their thing, we exchanged names, phone numbers, insurance. A tow truck came by to get my car, and he dropped me off at my apartment on the way to drop my car at the storage lot. After talking to the insurance folks, they inform me I have liability insurance, but no collision insurance.

So I don't get a cent from them for repairs or a replacement.

Fuck.

So now I'm left broke and car-less for the foreseeable future.

What a great way to start the weekend.

Goddamnit.
