Maybe he wasn't hearing things after all. That time Thorton's voice made him skid to a halt, winded and gasping for breath. It wasn't the same level of comfort as having his own boys, but an ally was an ally and at this point the agent was as good as any. The man had had Brayko's back once before, right?

It kept Brayko's finger off the trigger, at the very least. The warning registered, if only dimly, but he didn't lower the guns, and in a blink one was aimed directly at the lead officer, the second ready to turn on any of his men that moved, and despite the dull ache in his back and the slight tremor in his hands he kept his aim surprisingly steady.

"You," he snarled at Gene, accent thick and words stilted; understanding English was one thing. Trying to speak it when he was so out of practice was another entirely. "Who brought me here?"

He could hear Thorton, but couldn't see him, couldn't risk taking his eyes off either the officers still holding ground or their man in charge. His eyes narrowed, bloodshot and almost frantic as he constantly glanced between the men, looked for any weak point he could escape through. It wasn't looking good. He could take out another two or three, maybe even the chief himself, and make a break for it, but if too many more of them showed up-

When he continued speaking, though, he dropped back into Russian, too frustrated and anxious to bother with attempting anything else, and though he doubted anyone else would understand him his voice grew louder and harsher and enough for Thorton especially to hear.

"What the fuck is going on, where are we?"

Oh fantastic! Not only was he dealing with a crazed toss-pot with guns, he was dealing with a drugged up, crazed toss-pot with guns. Merry fucking Christmas, Gene Hunt! This was exactly why Gene detested drugs - well, one of the reasons, at least. Drugged up morons were not rational. Stick a gun or two in their hands and you were just inviting trouble in.

"That'd be the System then. They're the ones who bring us here. All of us. To fight their war. Course, not quite sure what they were thinking bringing you here since you seem to be shooting at the good guys." Bloody cop killer. It was hard enough getting a decent force together as it was without some bastard shooting them up.

And then he had the nerve to ramble on in some foreign language? Marvellous. "Speak ruddy English before I shoot you!"

"Don't tell me to fucking calm down," Brayko snapped. He only looked away from Gene when he saw movement out of the corner of his eye, and it took all of the mobster's self control to not reflexively turn one of his guns on Thorton himself once he moved into the open. There wasn't time to feel any relief, no time to do anything more than just send a brief, confused look between the agent and Gene. Thorton and the officer were both talking too fast, but he did catch more of that "war" bull he seemed to be hearing about all morning. For a second, he was sorely tempted to shoot the DCI in the face for that alone.

After a moment of hesitation, he stepped back, sent a quick, all too frustrated glance at Thorton. But then a moment after that, he actually heeded the man's warning. With something akin to a snarl, Brayko locked eyes with Gene one more time, and finally let both guns drop, the weapons clattering to the ground. Very slowly, he raised up his empty hands.

Thorton had better know just what the hell he was doing.

Brayko, don't blame Gene for the whole war nonsense! He wasn't the one who thought it up and dragged a bunch of strangers together to do their dirty work for them. Nope, nosiree, it was the System and their... systemness... He wasn't exactly happy to be part of it. And he had had enough of being shot in the face for one lifetime.

"You give me a guarantee no more folks will get their innards blown out and I can guarantee he'll be taken in alive." Of course, whether he made it through interrogation alive was another matter entirely...

Gene threw a pair of handcuffs at Thorton. "Cuff him." Hey, Brayko may've dropped his guns but there was no telling what other weaponry he might have on his person! Gene wasn't stupid.

Honestly, Brayko would have struggled even more once he was on the ground, if not for the handcuffs being locked tightly onto his wrists. Of all the things to have happened today, that was the one to send a cold chill down his spine, despite telling himself that he wasn't in any danger. And when he felt the knife taken next, he looked over his injured shoulder, glanced at Thorton with a brief spark of genuine nervousness.

But the agent would get them both out of here alive. Right? He had to trust him with this, just this once.

"Can't even say your own fucking rights correctly," he said distractedly, and winced when Thorton hauled him back up to his feet, teeth grit against the pain. Damn, that did kind of sting that time. But he could still stand under his own power, could still think straight. And as far as he could feel it, it couldn't have been a bad wound at all.

He watched as a different officer moved forward to collect his guns - Brayko scowled at that one, almost as if daring the man to touch them at all - before he turned back to Gene.

"Tell your "System"," he spat, in his heavily accented English. "They make a big mistake."

"That's... that's not how it goes..." It was like Sam all over again. Why did no one ever get it right? This is why sticking to the simple words 'you're nicked' were much more effective...

On the plus side, the bastard cop killer was cuffed and unarmed. One step at a time. Next step? Get the bastard cop killing civilian shooting scumbag off the streets and into police custody.

"They're not my System. I was brought 'ere exactly the same way as you lot." And he hadn't shot anyone!

If Thorton hadn't been holding him up, Brayko would have fallen right to his knees. The wind was knocked out of him, and for moment he couldn't breathe, couldn't speak, as he painfully gasped for breath.

The blood-rimmed look that Brayko sent up at Thorton next was just short of absolutely livid.

"Soon as I'm out of these handcuffs you sorry piece of shit-"

"The casualties will be well looked after. As for this scumbag? I reckon a nice little stay at the station. Get him all cosy in a cell." By which he meant throw him in a room that was not the least bit cosy at all...

"Might want to patch up his wounds first." He turned his attention to Brayko. "Course, if I had my way I'd let you bleed to death all over the ground. You know, like my officers, that you killed..."

And that fucking tone again. But he could only hope it was in his favor this time, while he still caught his breath, tried to concentrate on following the conversation through the panic haze and the ache. And after a moment he finally struggled to straighten.

"You should've let me shoot him, just once," he muttered, just loud enough for Thorton to hear, though he kept a dark look locked right on Gene while he spoke. "Just to shut him up."

So what if he got shot again in the process. At this point, it would've been worth it.

Well that wouldn't've been very nice now, would it, Brayko? Gene much preferred the no shooting him option. Yep, not being shot was far better than bleeding out all over the floor in a less than manly and dignified manner.

"He steps out of line. He puts so much as one little finger out of line in my city again and I will shoot him. You got that?" Be thankful, Thorton, that Gene was even allowing him to play babysitter.

It was that one look that finally seemed to get through to Brayko. And for a moment, even had him try to pull away.

Too late.

He did fall, after that, doubled over on his knees, the taste of blood flooding his mouth and the sudden sharp pain in his gut making it impossible to breathe. And that final blow put him the rest of the way down, Brayko falling to his side with the first noise of pain he'd made since the shooting had started.

That time, he couldn't make a smart remark even if he had wanted to.
