Happy February!
I am back at work today after an extended sickness (and feeling much better, thank you). I guess I always hope, somewhere in my heart, that things will change by the time I come back. So far, no. But it's alright...I missed John and kind of Scott and almost Bill.
The book club recently decided that since we are both too poor to keep buying books and since we both have a copy or two of the Bible laying around that we will read the Bible for the rest for the year. We have opted to read things chonrologically and found a website that maps out the whole Bible for a year. So, on January 31, 2010 we will be finished.
So far we have come across a few questions, and (judging from a google search on these topics, we are not the first girls to ponder):
#1 - Who are the "other people" that Cain mentions in his conversation with God? See, Cain kills his brother Abel and so God punishes him by cursing him and the ground he walks on and banishing him to go live with...the other people. Cain is scared that these other people will kill him, and so God marks him so that no one will kill Cain. But our question is...who are these people? Some scholars (Manda's sister-in-law) believe that they are the rest of the children of Adam and Eve, but I'm not so sure.
#2 - In the Creation, God says something about separating the "waters above" from the "waters below"...What the crap does that mean? I mean, I get it, that's when he made the sky...but what are the waters above? The rainclouds? It's a minor little question, but I like when I can honestly understand what's going on.
#3 - Why would God even bother to make the tree in Eden that no one was allowed to touch? Cruel test? Did he/He know that we would fail?
Look, that's as far as I got really because (chronologically) they ("they"?) made us start reading Job and, let me tell you, Job is real real boring.
I get it: God took everything from Job...or rather, God allowed Stan (this is what I've decided to call Satan, only because I feel really goofy saying Satan) to take everything from Job. EVERYTHING: his kids, his wealth, his wife.... and then his two friends come to comfort him. The whole point is that Job is such a great servant and not once does he curse God....but REALLY....who needs almost 40 chapters of whining and grieving?????
I have to post this now. Lest John Mayes poop himself...
