The Metropolitan Opera House -- And, Of Course, Kristin Chenoweth

Jan 21, 2007 09:35

Okay, well, I know it's been a really, really long time since I wrote in here. I didn't even document December 28th, which was clearly one of the best days ever. I may or may not get around to doing that, but for now... I am going to document January 19th, because, hello best day ever!

I took my chemistry exam in the morning. I wore a pink ribbon in my hair to it just because it was National Kristin Chenoweth Day. I was fidgety throughout the exam because I was just TOO excited. After the exam, I met up with Jennie 'cause I was taking her home with me and we were going to hang out and go to lunch. Which is what we did. We watched Mean Girls (well, most of it), but I was in and out of the room doing various things to start getting ready. I straightened my hair and I painted my nails and such. My mother, my sister, Jennie, and I all went for lunch at Panera. When we got back, I got dressed and started getting everything ready. My mother and I took Jennie home on our way to the train station.

We got on a 2:52 train or something like that. The train ride was dull and, as usual, I really, really had to pee. This time, however, I just couldn't hold it and succumbed and used the bathroom on the train. I have never done that before so it clearly needed to be documented as well. I didn't do anything special on the train ride... just talked with my mother and stuff.

We got into Grand Central around 4:40. We stopped in the Rite Aid because my mother wanted candy and a nail file. We also grabbed a seasame bagel while there and each ate half while walking.

Yes, we did ultimately decide to walk to the Met from Grand Central. It's not hugely far and we were always kind of planning on walking there, it's just that we didn't know the weather and stuff. For the record, on our walk, it wasn't that bad at all. It wasn't that windy and it definitely could have been colder. On the way, I made sure to walk past Studio 54 just to show my mother. Yep. Kristin Chenoweth, man. She's important. Anyways, I guided us and we eventually stopped in a Wendy's for a bit. My mother got a 5-piece chicken nugget and I ate one of them. She also got a vanilla frosty because... it WASN'T winter outside? I don't know. She's nuts. I ate some of that, too, though. We continued walking.

We arrived at the Met around 6:00. By then it really was starting to get cold. I was glad we were there. We sat inside and my mother made friends with this older woman who was sitting in a box. She was a very nice lady and I really enjoyed talking to her about Kristin Chenoweth and about her daughter, too. So, yes. I had to go to the bathroom and I kind of just wanted to look around a bit, so, I left my mother with this woman maybe around 6:30 and explored for a while. I went to the bathroom, too, of course. This may or may not have been one of the most amusing moments of my night, by the way. While I was in my stall, several girls walked into the bathroom. I could tell by their chatter and junk. One girl, in the stall next to me, called out to one of the girls just at the sink/mirror, "You know, Kristin Chenoweth could have used this toilet." At that very moment in time, I knew that there was at least one Glitter Gal in this bathroom. I wondered who it was. BY THE WAY. To flush the toilet... there was a peddle on the floor. This took me a while to figure out and it was definitely the coolest thing ever, so, it needed to be mentioned. ANYHOW. I walked out of my stall and there was a girl, a girl I recognized as Jenna, putting on lip gloss in the mirror. As I stepped out of my stall, I saw her jaw DROP in the mirror and she whipped around and looked at me. She said, "You're on Glitter, aren't you?" I nodded. She was like, "Wait. Wait. Wait. DON'T tell me." She snapped her fingers in the air... "You're Mandah!" I was like, "Yep. I am." She smiled and went back to her mirror, "I'm Jenna." I stayed and talked to Jenna for a bit, just chit chat. Her jaw dropped again when I told her that I was sitting in the orchestra. I left her, though, and went back to my mother. We continued to talk to that woman and I eventually, around maybe 7:00-ish, saw Malvina and Alex walk by us. They didn't see me, but I smiled to myself. Once I could get away from that woman, I took the chance to. My mother and I walked over to wait in line to get in. I saw Malvina and Alex waiting, too. We eventually were allowed in and as I was walking in behind Malvina and Alex, Malvina turned around and saw me. "Hiiiii!" We walked over to the door we were to be going in. Casey and Jaimie found us, too. And Jenna did for a bit, too. We all were basically too excited to function, but had fun jumping up and down excitedly and things. We saw Kristin's mother (at least we think we did). Casey was like, "I WANT THAT WOMAN'S AUTOGRAPH." It was funny. Sammie called me because, yeah, I was there and she knew it. I let all the Glitter Gals I was with at the time say "Hi" to her. I talked to her for, like, 3 minutes. We eventually all went in.

My mother and I took our seats and I basically started hyperventilating. I paid $110 for my ticket and I've got to be honest... I would paid that much just to go inside the Metropolitan Opera House. I couldn't believe I was in it. It was like... sdfkllksjdf;lkjsdfl;kjsdf. There aren't even words for how I was excited to just BE there let alone BE THERE to see KRISTIN CHENOWETH.

People filed in and my mother and I just talked and things. Eventually, a boy about my age took the seat next to me. My mother was excited. "Amanda, you HAVE to marry him!! LOOK! HE'S CUTE! AND HE LIKES KRISTIN CHENOWETH!" I hit her, but, you know, that's my mother for you.

I'm going to go through the show now. The lights dimed and the chandeliers raised.

ACT I - Things You Want

Andrew Lippa walked out and I was hugely excited. He sat at his piano. Eventually, Kristin came running out in a Mets cap, over-sized Mets shirt, with a Mets flag. Everyone cheered and clapped and screamed, several people stood. Once we settled down, Kristin said, "Can anyone tell me the way to the hotdog stand?" The audience laughed and Andrew Lippa said, "No, no. Kristin. It's the MET. Not the METS." Kristin was like, "Huh?" He was like, "The MET-RO-POL-ITAN OP-ERA HOUSE." She goes, "Whoops!" And started running off the stage, "PLAY SOMETHING!" Andrew Lippa played the overture (with the rest of the orchesta, obviously), which was "My New Philosophy". Once he finished, the back curtain raised and pulled back, and standing there was Miss Kristin Chenoweth in a beautiful, sparkly, little red dress. We all clapped and such and when we calmed down, she started... "LOOK. AT. ME. I'm gorgeousssssss. I am absolutely GORGEOUSSSS." She sang "Gorgeous" from The Apple Tree. It was neat seeing her do this out of context... to me anyways. Afterwards, she went and took a sip of her pink dragonfruit vitamin water (that's what I assume it was, anyways) and started to talk about how she was kind of nervous being here at the Met and things like that. She did her little polaroid camera bit that she does... taking a picture of the audience, of her parents, of the orchestra, and of herself saying, "It's just proof, y'know?" She began to tell a story about how she called up her friend, and acclaimed opera star, Renee Fleming and asked her, "How do you do it? How do you always make it sound so pretty?" She said that Renee said, "Oh, Kristin, Kristin, Kristin. It's not about sounding pretty..." And the first note of "Popular" came from Andrew's piano. The audience cheered excitedly as she began singing "Popular". She stopped during the pause and said, "And then Renee said to me... that sometimes I just wear one of these" and Kristin whipped out one of those hats with the horns that opera people wear? She finished the song "Popular" operatically with that hat on. It was priceless. Seriously priceless. Way to turn a huge musical theater number into an opera, Kristin. Seriously. Next... her dancers came out. She began to tell the story of Beau Breedlove and did "Goin' To The Dance With You" with her dancers. The two danced off the stage together, of course, at the end and Kristin said, "It really happened." So, I love that song. A lot. That's basically all I have to say. She took the time next to say, "I've decided that the reason I am not married yet is because I compare every man to my father. Which therapy would probably help fix." She proceeded to tell a hilarious story about how her agent e-mails her father. One time, she e-mailed him saying "We need the deets about the peeps." Her father then e-mailed HER saying, "Kristin, what are deets and who are peeps?" She sang the song "Boy" next and I've got to say... I just love hearing her do this song. She does it SO well and it's SO beautiful. I love it. An audience favorite, as well as a favorite of mine, was next. And, for tonight, it was also really funny because she messed up the lyrics. "If You Hadn't But You Did", AMAZING. So, she shot him and proceeded to dance with the dead guy, y'know. That's how it goes. She put his hands in a very, very, hugely suggestive place at one point that I don't actually remember her ever doing before (but maybe that's just 'cause I'm dumb and don't remember things) and I was like, "Way to be, Kristin. WAY. TO. BE." Also, at the point where she takes his hands and slaps him across the face multiple times... she stopped to say, "THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG!" It was really, really funny. Anyways, like I said, she messed up the lyrics at one time and just went, "Blahblegblahbleblahhhh!" And continued the song, laughing slightly to herself. After the song, she went up to the mike and was like, "Did you like those new lyrics? Blahblegblahbleblahhhh? I did." "Taylor, the Latte Boy" was next and, of course, the audience was hugely excited. She was hilarious and I love her. She's always good at this... and, yeah, basically, it's Kristin doing "Taylor". Her dancers next sang "You're Easy to Dance With" (by Irving Berlin and it made me really, really, REALLY happy) while dancing with her. It was a great dance number and when they came out she was like, "Oh, good, you're still alive" (after the "If" number). It was funny. I enjoyed this a lot (not that there was something about this night that I didn't enjoy or something). She started to talk about how it was hard for her to sleep once she moved to the city. "It's so loud!" And then, because she was doing "The Girl in 14G" next, she, of course, said, "And of course... there's always neighbors." I adore this song and I always will. OPERA!Kristin is a winner, as is STOOOOOOOPPPP!Kristin and SCATTING!KRISTIN. Pure love. Seriously.

Intermission! I stayed in my seat during this. I saw a bunch of Glitterites hanging around by the stage and I was going to go down there, but... I didn't. I probably should have, but honest? I didn't feel like getting up.

ACT II - Things You Need

She came out in a beautiful, dark blue evening gown. She was absolutely gorgeous and her hair was up. I loved it. "Italian Street Song" was the first number. The Julliard choir sang with her, too, and they were really great. And she played the tambourine!! That made me really happy. But I was really sad that she didn't bang it again her boobs like in RV, but still... TAMBOURINE. AMAZING. She then said that one of her idols, Bette Midler, was in the audience. She talked about Florence Birdwell, too (Kristin's voice teacher in college, who was in the audience). She gave the sweetest speech ever. She told the story of how she went to school the first day. It was a masters class. Kristin was like, "I didn't even know what a masters class WAS. I was waiting for some master to come... and it was her!" She continued the story about how Florence Birdwell said that a freshman was going to sing today and called Kristin's name and Kristin was like, "But I don't have my music" and she told her, "Mistake number one. Always be prepared." Kristin said that she sang "New York, New York" (because she had sang it, along with "Matchmaker", for her audition) complete with jazz squares and the splits at the end and Florence Birdwell just said, "I can't WAIT to teach you how to sing!" Then Kristin did her funny. "She was the first person to tell me to sing from my *gestures* mmm-mmmmm." The audience laughed and she was like, "I've never even SEEN it! I don't want sing from it!" It was funny. She did a Gilbert and Sullivan Medly next and I was really, really, REALLY hugely happy about that. MORE OPERA!KRISTIN! She had a little fight with the flute player, too. That was funny. He would play something and she would top him and she eventually was just like, "OH NO YOU DI-ANT!" and stole the flute from him and finished the song. It was hysterical. "Love Somebody Now" was next. This was probably my favorite of the night because she was just POURING her soul out and I could just SEE it. It was SO amazing and I definitely cried and I hope that someday there will be a recording of this song because it was just so sweet and so fabulous and I loved it SO much. I hope I get to hear it again. "How Can I Lose You?" was next and it was absoutely gorgeous, too. I love Adam Guettel so much and I was SOOO excited that she was singing one of his songs. "Run Away" was after this and it was really, really fabulous just because of how much she put in it and behind it. It was very passionate and just... stunning. "Hard Times" was next and I thought this was hugely sweet. I really loved the lyrics more than anything and she did a really great job with it. She ended with "Show Me The Way" and that was beautiful. I loved it. It was so powerful. We were on our feet cheering.

That was the end of the show except that... she did TWO encores.

Her dancers brought out a stool and a box of jewels and the moment I saw it... I spazzed. My mother whispered, "What's that?" I was just, "JUST WATCH!!!" She did "Glitter and Be Gay", of course. This is the one thing that I wanted to hear more than anything and when it wasn't on the thing... I was really sad, so... I was SOOOO happy when I saw that box of jewels. She came out and did "Glitter and Be Gay" and I nearly DIED. Basically. She exited and we were on our feet again... cheering WILDLY for FAR too long.

She came out again.

She sat next to Andrew on the piano bench and hit a note on the piano and then rehit her note from "Glitter and Be Gay". She's like, "I knew I could do it better". We laughed and she hit it again. Someone yelled "Encore!" and she hit the note yet again. It was really funny and I love her hugely. She dedicated the next song to Andrew Lippa and I love her for it. She did "What Makes Me Love Him?" from The Apple Tree and SHE started genuinely crying towards the end of it which made Amanda start to GENUINELY cry. She changed up the lyrics a bit at one point, too. She said something like, "Though on occassion, I'd like to kiss him" to Andrew Lippa (and after the song, of course, she kissed him).

She took her FINAL bow and we clapped uproariously and screamed and stood and cheered and amazingness.

So, stagedoor time. I headed down to the stagedoor and though Kristin did not end up ultimately coming out, I had a hell of a time just hanging out with Jenna at the stagedoor. I saw Dara there, too and waved to her. Basically... uhm, Bette Midler walked by and I was too afraid to say anything and Jenna didn't even realize that it was her and it was funny. Kathleen Marshall walked by and Jenna told her how amazing she was and just... various things. We saw Andrew Lippa, too. And... the entire orchestra (basically) and we told everyone how great they did and all kinds of things like that. Oh, and Florence Birdwell. That was an amazing moment. I don't remember everyone we saw but... it was a really, really fun time.

My mother and I caught a cab back to Grand Central. We had to wait until 12:22 to catch a train back. I fell asleep on the train and had a dream that I was seeing The Apple Tree and it made me really, really happy.

We got back and didn't have a ticket for parking illegally and that's happy. And I basically came home and flopped in bed EXHAUSTED.

THE END.
*bows*
