I'm back! I've been quite busy this past week. Okay, so not "busy", but preoccupied. Morris and I went to see Hancock on Tuesday. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a refreshing superhero movie in the heat of comic book adaptations arising more prevalently. Hancock's origin, I confess, wasn't to my liking, but it had less to do with poor writing and just a lack of taste in that subject. Overall it was a fantastic movie worth seeing.
We took a stop by Wal-Mart beforehand and, although I wanted to wait a while, Morris decided to go ahead and buy me Metal Gear Solid 4. Morris is a much a gamer as I am, but his collection doesn't extend much further than popular RPG titles. I've been trying to convince him to play the Metal Gear games, though, because they have such a deeply integrated storyline. Speaking of, the fourth installment is very epically displayed. It's truly a spectacular end to the series. I'm playing the game on "Liquid Easy" mode right now, but solely to skim through the gameplay and get right to the storyline. I have the skill to beat the game's on Hard mode, but the Easy difficulty allows me to enjoy the story first, which is appreciated. The ratio of cutscene/storyline to gameplay seems to be 70:30. There's so much jam-packed in there, and they aren't skipping out of any of the unanswered questions that arose in previous titles.
In previous games, the settings took place in a confined area. MGS on an island base in Alaska, MGS2 on the Big Shell, MGS3 having more area than the previous, but still being in a small area in Russia. MGS4 takes you to multiple places across the globe. Starting you off in a Middle-Eastern war zone, then moving you to South America, to a city district in an Eastern European country, and up to Alaska where the first game took place. I just started chapter 5, so I'm wondering if we'll see any more exotic locations or if Outer Haven is the location for our final showdown.
I love the focus on the vulnerabilities of Solid Snake. I had little care for him in the previous games, and steered more towards Big Boss because of the focus on him as a person first and a soldier second. 'Guns' (as it's being dubbed) takes it one step further than Snake Eater, and gives me a new outlook on Solid, as well as some other characters whose emotions shine through a lot more (it must be how the characters get pummeled to within inches of their life. That's how you develop a character =P ).
Well, seeing as I just woke up and will now be up all night with another chapter to go in the game, I'm psyched to finish it off. I'm expecting them to kill off a couple more characters in spectaculars fashions (at LEAST Snake, that way the fans can't beg for another sequel). If I finish tonight, I'll be back on the share my views on how it ended.
