Graduate schools and the programs I'm considering:

University of Rochester - Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies.
Things I like about this program:
1. PhD.  If I'm going to put in the effort I might as well go all the way.
2. ALL students are offered research assistantships or TA positions for their first 4 years.  I could live off that money.
3. I've already read some work by some of the professors there.  It's good.
4. Offeres a lof of philosophy of art and of museums.
5. Offers a lot on writing about and managing art, too.
6. Also, there's a lot of flexibility in the electives and I could focus on a number of different studies beyond art history.
Things I don't liek about this program:
1. Not a huge fan of the U of R.  I've had trouble getting around campus and it took me forever to figure out where the information I wanted was on their website.
2. along the same lines, I can't find how much the graduate program costs anywhere on the website.

Cornell University - History of Art, Archaeology, & Visual Studies.
Things I like about this program:
1. PhD.  This is my long-term goal, after all.
2. Ithica is a pretty cool place.
3. Large, interdiciplinary faculty teaches for the program.
4. PhD students are guaranteed an MA after admission to the candidacy exam.
5. Many of the professors are also interested in urban studies.
6. Cornell looks good on the wall.
Things I don't like about this program:
1. Large focus on "old, white guy" art from most of the professors areas of study.
2. Not much in the course offerings along the lines of the philosophy of art, and almost nothing on museum and cultural studies (other than a couple diaspora classes, but I took that with Beth at Geneseo).
3. I'd have to move.  I think it's too far to coomute for that many years, the program is designed to be finished as a full time student.

University at Buffalo - Art History or Arts Management
Things I like about this program:
1. The price.  Way less than UofR or Cornell.
2. The Art History program has a Critical Museum Studies certificate that can be added on to it
Things I don't like about this program:
1. It's only an MA.
2. I'd have to move.
3. No one cares about a certificate, and art history by itself is limiting.
4. The management program has much more business and law in it than I personally care for.

Brockport - Visual Studies
Things I like about this program:
1. The price.
2. I could probably commute
Things I don't like about this program:
1. Other than listing it and contact information for the department on the website, there is no information about the program that I can find.
2. It's only MA.

Syracuse University - Art History or Arts Journalism
Things I like about this program:
1. It's a pretty concentrated program, I could probably commute for 2 years.  Or, the journalism program is only a year long.
Things I dislike about this program:
1. 'Cuse is listed last becasue I don't really like the city or the campus.
2. It's only MA.
3. The art hsitory is mostly old European art.
4. no musuem studies.
5. journalism degree would be pretty useless.

So that's what I spent my day thinking about.  GRE registration deadline is friday
