After a week in California with Mickle, Spade returned to the Mansion, tanner and more inclined to stay sober than when he left it. His bitterness was under the surface, now, rather than raw, and the change in him would take a sharper eye to pick up than before. He still hadn't decided if he was going to try and leave for good or not, but he had decided that there were enough people at the Mansion who warranted a goodbye not to just disappear.
He was currently on the front porch, smoking and working on a crossword puzzle. He'd bought himself a large stack of various newspapers while away, and was slowly but surely working through them, though he was starting to give serious thought to the fact he'd need a new way to occupy himself, if he decided to stay for any length of time.
