Just a few quick thoughts on tonight's episode, which I totally enjoyed. Except for the Rose bits, but what did you expect? And I say 'quick', but do I ever actually mean it?
So anyway. My first response about ten or fifteen minutes in was to go "OMG MARTHA'S IMPORTANT!!!" and then squeed the whole remainder of the time. I was so, so worried that they were going to write her off like they have tended to do so often, but they didn't! SHE HOLDS THE KEY, and I hope it ends up being something actually useful to the next episode and not some kind of cop out. Also: no sappy unbelievable engagement ring moments, thank God. On the other hand, I also would not be surprised if all her importance in this episode was only created to justify all the Saint Rose Love in the next one.
Rose's whole jealous moment at the computer screen...well, I enjoyed it. Because it basically goes to show that Martha is in nobody's shadow, and this is Rose learning that, and possibly not taking it so well. Which doesn't reflect very well on her, but I don't think too highly of her in the first place, so this is not surprising. Also, this brings up a question that maybe some of you will be able to answer: how is it that Rose knew all about Donna (I do believe 'monitored since birth' was mentioned in Turn Left, right?) but knew absolutely nothing about Martha's existence?
I do not like the whole line about the destuction of The Doctor's 'most loyal companion'. For several reasons. First and foremost because it makes me fear for Donna, who I adore, though I have been worried about her for some time now. But also because if it is Donna, I don't like what that says. Actually, I don't like what that says about any of the companions, but especially if it's Donna. If Rose is the most loved and Donna is 'the most loyal', wtf does that make Martha? I don't think it's right to classify them as such, and I don't particularly see why Donna is 'more loyal' than Rose, Martha, Jack, or Sarah Jane. And this statement stands if it turns out that Rose is the one to be destructed, or Martha, or Jack, or Sarah Jane. The writers (COUGHRTD) should not put labels on the companions. End of story kthx.
Also, where was Martha for the end of the episode? I don't like The Doctor going through a regen without her present. Rose, Jack, and Donna were all in the Tardis, SJS was on her way, but what? Martha was chilling at home with mum? Slightly unrelated: LAWL at the teleport thing taking her home TO MUM and not TO TOM. Sure guys, I really believe she loves him as much as she loved(s) The Doctor.
Lastly the regeneration. I read a lot of theories about what happened after being in quite a bit of denial myself. My first reaction was "No, I don't buy it." But then I got to thinking. I don't trust anything they say, really, knowing how much they lie. And then I remembered the spoilery photos I saw awhile back of filming for one of the Christmas eps with David obviously playing the Doctor, and I thought....what if he does regenerate in the next episode, and then the four or five specials DO have Ten, but in a past timey wimey way? Like PREVIOUS adventures? Kind of giving the fans time to adjust to the thought of having a new Doctor when series five rolls around. Sort of like reading the novels with Martha in after series three is over. I, like many, will be rather annoyed if they faked a regeneration. And yet I, like many, will be very sad to see Ten go if that's the case.
