I'm gonna be speaking pretty ugly here. Please excuse my language.
You know what I hate? When you want to make a discussion/debate about something being sexist (or racist, or scariest, both) and people decide to say 'well yeah, but there'll always be sexism'. And you know why there will always be sexism/racism/both? BECAUSE FUCKWADS LIKE YOU EXCUSE IT AT EVERY TURN. And lets pray these people don't decide and are able to actually publish something and end up throwing it into their works as well.
It bugs the shit out of me when people point out the sexism in manga and then people say 'well it's japan', or 'it's a shounen!', or worse yet 'well it probably is to you because you're from a western culture'. Lets get this straight, there's problem a general standard that everyone can agree of a way that women (characters) jsut shouldn't be treated. No matter the culture. I think even if Japan is distinctly different, it's not like they don't know. Kishimoto, Kubo and Miyazaki all were born, raised and live in the same country. Why is one of them so damn feminist in everything he does the other two are shit female writers? No fucking excuse.
And you know what's funny about the 'shounen' statement? Sure, you'd think shounen is aimed at only boys, but a good deal of women and young girls read it too. There are quite female writers of shounen. And in the first place, I don't like people even thinking that women should just have to read shoujo/jousei. Boys get trucks and girls get dolls, much? And you know what, don't even bring up shoujo to me, cuz I will have to slap you. And own you. Make you my bitch. Jousei? Well, Kimi wa Petto. That's all I'm gonna say and gonna need. There are plenty of good ones, but lets just start there and leave I there.
I just think that people should stop being so delusion when it comes to this stuff. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a series that has sexism/racism (in some cases), but it's good to have a critical eye, realize that's wrong and if you can, speak about it. Do something maybe. And if you happen to be a creative person as well, stay away from exercising those squicky things you realize show up in the series you enjoy.
Everything doesn't need to be feminist (that'd be good for both genders though), but it never needs to be sexist. Ever. And that should never be excused. You're a moron whenever you try to excuse it.
