The memory started with a door slam.
"Forty-eight personalities," The voice was male, and obviously angry. As he spoke there was the sound of footsteps following him and the creak of stairs being climbed. " ...each with it's own rich history and none of it tells me anything."
Something was dropped to the ground with a dramatic flop.
"Who's Alpha?"
The person who answered him spoke with a feminine British accent that seemed to be the polar opposite of the angry American voice. "Alpha is all of these."
She was then followed by Genius speaking in a loud, condescending voice. "Heh. That's what I keep saying. Heheh."
His laughter seemed more like a nervous tick than anything genuine.
"And of course it doesn't tell YOU anything, it doesn't tell ME anything, and I'm smarter than everyone in this room!"
There was a pause so awkward you could just reach out and touch it.
"...But less scary," Genius concluded sheepishly.
The annoyed male from before continued. "I know you're all invested in your vaunted technology, and it is very impressive, but I still don't believe you can wipe away a person's soul. "
There was a half second's pause before Genius blurted out, "Their whaaat?"
"Their soul. Who they are, at their core. I don't think that goes away."
This time Genius was quick to respond with a triumphant tone of voice. "You'd be wrong about that. "
But this only seemed to anger the other man and his voice grew louder with each word. "I want to know who Alpha was! Who was he before! In private life."
The woman's voice--Catherine--quickly interrupted. "That is not relevant. "
"With all respect." This was a new voice, also male, deeper and professional. "One of Alpha's first's acts after compositing was to destroy his original self. We should know who that was."
"Huh?" Whatever Genius had been expecting from the new voice, that observation clearly wasn't it. "Youuu--Alright! I still have about nineteen personality builds to reassemble, so I can try to figure out which of Echo's imprints Alpha used on her."
There were footsteps as Genius parted from the group with a mocking tone of voice.
"So, heheh. Good luck with the whole 'God' thing."
