My entire year’s hard labor at work got paid off eventually!!!! I got an Airtel postpaid SIM as a reward, meaning company will partially take care of my phone bills henceforth.
My manager was under some severe misconception that I’ll get motivated with this and work really hard after this. Anyway that’s a story for another day.
I didn’t want to part with my old number coz it’s been with me since 1952 BC. Besides it’s gonna be really difficult to memorize a new number. It’s like parting with an old pair of hmm…….something you really really like. I was in a deep quandary. After I successfully sent a message to all my contacts about my new number, I changed my mind and kept the old one.
Phew, one problem solved!
Now I got busy with a new problem. I needed a new phone for the new number. So without wasting another moment and before I changed my fickle mind I rushed to Girias to acquire a new phone.
At Girias:
Sales rep was on his smoke break busy puffing away to glory. Looking at me waddling towards the store, he stubbed his cigarette and sprinted back to his position.
Salesrep: Smiling unabashedly (corners of his mouth was almost in close proximity with his ear lobes) he said “Yes Ma’am”
Batting my eyelashes I said: "I want a Nokia phone within 2000Rs range…."
"Also I want a phone with a flashlight feature please….."
"And yes, the phone has to be slim and I prefer black color…."
SR was appalled by my unreasonable request. His face fell at once and his broad smile turned into a meager pout.
What a waste of a wonderful break he must’ve thought. He pro'lly imagined stubbing the cigarette on my face….
When he first greeted me, his countenance was as if I just asked him to run me through some phones within 50000Rs range which had Bluetooth, Camera, MP3, MS office tools and all that Jazz.
To ease his pain, I showed off my battered, almost dead 4 years old 6030 Nokia phone by monkeying with it, hoping he’ll understand, this new phone was just an appendage for me. He still had a long face.
He grabbed a couple of sets from the display and reluctantly showed it to me. Very disinterestedly he spoke about the-barely there-features.
Me: "Could you please show me that phone?" SR showed it to me.
I went on "how about that one" SR patiently showed it to me.
After demonstrating a couple of phones….
Me: "Can you show me that phone?"
He finally mustered the audacity and said
SP: "No Ma’am, it’s the only piece we have and can’t demonstrate it."
Me: "what if I want to buy ONLY that phone"
SP: "We will still not show the phone"
Watching Astha channel regulary did a lot of good to me. I just chuckled at his comment and bought the first phone he showed-Nokia 1662-without much argument.
I was more than eager to be done with it.
Phew one more problem solved!!!!
That was not the end of it. Unfortunately I’m faced with another problem…..
Right next day I realized my phone was defective. Phone hangs half way through while searching for contacts…mental fellow!
I had no stomach for another round of verbal lashes with the SP. Bracing myself for the iciness I hurried to Girias……
Without much conversation Girias guys promptly referred me to Nokia Customer Care, although I went back to them within 24 hours…. They didn’t pay heed to my concern.
I suddenly realized I’m paying for all the sins of my previous lives in one shot…
I went to the nearest Nokia Customer Care Center and (im)patiently waited one hour for my turn. When it was my turn, I approached the Tech1 with my concern. Just then a colleague of Tech1 announced to her that she had some training the next day while I was awaiting her response. From the look on the Tech1’s face I could tell she wasn’t interested in the training. And after the horrid news she was definitely in no mood to assist me… If you ask me she needed more than training….She glanced through my phone, dismantled and un-dismantled it and requested me to come back the next day.
I obliged and went back the next day. Tech1 wasn’t around, perhaps she was attending the most detested training ever. I waited my turn and approached Tech2. She glanced through my phone and pitied me for it’s just two days old and selflessly suggested me to get it exchanged. I told her my sob story and pleaded her to help me. She did her diagnosis, took the phone and requested me to come back the next day.
I obliged and went back the next day. I waited my turn and approached Tech3. He brought the phone back and said it’s fixed. I breathed a sigh of relief and tried my SIM. To my horror I found out that the issue was not fixed. Tech3 tried to convince me by saying “ ONE ONE time ONE ONE phone will not support ONE ONE SIM” and requested me to change the SIM. I begged to differ, and showed him some magic tricks. My SIM worked on all the other phones but the new one. He was annoyed and asked me to come back after ONE ten days. And YES, he was suffering from ONE syndrome.
I went back after ONE 10days and realized the issue was still not fixed. Nokia Customer Care Manager spoke to me and tried to confuse me by giving me gyan on some virus and some crap like that.
I spent 400Rs traveling in rickshaw trying to get the issue fixed for bloody 2000Rs phone. I decided to take my phone back and use it the way it is or I would end up paying ONE 2000Rs traveling to get the issue fixed for ONE 2000Rs phone.
Seriously a bike mechanic would've done a better job handling my phone than these Nokia Customer Care guys…..
Good news is, thanks to the power cuts, I’ve been using the flashlights feature of my new slim, black phone to the fullest. :D :D :D
