Patrick stared at me with a worried look on his face. “Do you have any idea what this means, Pete?”
“Um… no…?”
“It means that he’s back, Nosferatu, I mean. He's the leader of a species just like him. We killed off most of the species years ago, and now he’s back,” he grew more solemn. “It means that people are going to be dying all over the place, and there’s hardly any way to stop it. He’ll make an army of his kind, apparently starting with you, and then they’ll start killing.”
I was silent, so Patrick continued, “I know you’ve seen the movie but this is different. This isn’t some hideous monster. People won't avoid him because he's so horrible looking. They won't fear him for what he really is. You saw him. He, and those like him, are extremely attractive.” He paused a moment, clearing his throat and looking right into my eyes. “They draw people to them, and then kill them viciously.” Drawing in a long breath through clenched teeth, he put his head in one hand. “And you’ll be no different,” he whispered.
I opened my mouth to respond, but was silenced by a sharp pain slicing through my middle. I slid to the floor with my arms wrapped around myself.
I heard Andy say something about helping me, but Patrick stopped him before he could.
I groaned as the pain increased and began to spread through my back and up over my shoulders.
“What’s happening?” I yelled through the loud static that now filled my ears.
“You’re dying,” I was surprised to hear Patrick’s soft voice through the noise.
I whimpered against the pain, before suddenly it was gone.
Sitting up, I gave Patrick a panicked look.
“It’s all right, Pete. It’s just your body dying. Everyone dies. You’ll just stay in that body even after it’s died,” his voice was infuriatingly calm. “You’ll need to stay here until your transformation is complete, especially if it was that bad this first time.”
I stood up quickly, “You mean it’s not over?” I screeched, shocking myself with how loud my voice got.
Andy winced and covered his ears. Patrick now wore a look on his face that was impossible to read, but at the same time, incredibly soothing.
“Let me see your scales,” Patrick whispered.
I raised my eyebrows in confusion before taking off my shirt and turning around so he could see. He stepped forward and touched the area where the spots had shown up that morning. I shivered against his warm touch.
“Exactly what I thought,” he mumbled.
“What?! What happened?” I whirled around to face him, nearly knocking him over in the process.
“Let me show you. Follow me.” He headed out of the library. I followed shortly behind, feeling like a lost puppy. He led me into a bathroom and instructed me to look at the spots in the mirror.
What I saw nearly made me scream. The handful of small scales that had been there that morning were now a huge patch that spread over my entire shoulder blade, with a matching spot on each side.
“So, what… am I becoming a vampire lizard or something?” I asked Patrick, using sarcasm to cover my fear.
“No, you’re growing wings. Basically, you’re becoming a bat.”
“With scales? I may not be an expert on bat anatomy, but I do know that bats don’t have scales.”
“They only look like scales now. Once they’re fully-grown, they won’t be scaly at all. They should be soft and leathery.”
I put my head in my hands. “Why, Patrick? Why me? Couldn’t he have chosen someone else?”
“He could have.” Patrick rubbed my shoulder gently, not worrying about avoiding where my wings were sprouting, “He probably just choose the most beautiful person in the room.” He smiled reassuringly. I raised my tear stained face to look at him. “He also must have known that your soul was strong, and that you would join his army.”
“But what if I don’t want to join his army?” I pouted, wiping tears from my cheek.
“You may not have to, but it’ll be damn hard to resist once you’re fully changed.”
“So I’m not done changing?” I whined.
“Unfortunately, no. But you’ll be staying here, so I can help you through it. And hopefully because of that, you'll adopt my customs, as opposed to theirs, so your instincts may be lessened. There’s really no way to tell.”
“So what exactly is going to happen to me? To make me change, I mean?”
“It’s impossible to say. I’ve only witnessed a changing vampire once before, and that was hund- uh- a long time ago.”
I was silent for a moment, wondering what would happen.
“Patrick?” I spoke up quietly.
“Hmmm…?”
“Thank you,” I did my best to smile at him.
“For what?”
“Helping me.”
“Oh, Pete, there’s no need to thank me,” smiled back. I don’t deserve it, I could have sworn I heard him say, but he’d squeezed my shoulder and left the bathroom before I could figure it out.

I am soooooo sorry for how long this took. School started about three weeks ago, and my marching band instructor is a jackass and has us practicing almost every day of the week, so I've been insanely busy... Anyway, I hope this chapter makes up for the incredibly horrible awful terrible lateness of it!!
