adios Mervyn's......

Hi folks!

I've been working almost nonstop since DragonCon, and will continue to be on that track until the Alternative Press Expo in 2 weeks (if you're in San Francisco, come see John Lotshaw and Bill Holbrook!) I hope you are all doing well...

as most of you know, I have grey hairs that are well earned....(grin). But, once upon a time in a galaxy far far away, I was working for Sears in a call center, living with my parents in the middle of an almond orchard, and attending courses at Modesto Junior College. I also did not have any grey hair....(grin)

Turlock did not have any clothing stores at the time but Mervyn's. Mervyn's had semi-decent clothes at prices I could afford on 4.50 an hour. Plus, they gave me my first credit card and at eighteen, that was important!

I've spent a pretty penny at Mervyn's over the past 21 years. There is a Mervyn's Plaza that is roughly one mile from the Casa de MLD, and a good chunk of my wardrobe has been purchased there at 8:55 pm going "oh crud, I have nothing decent to wear tomorrow!". For someone who can't stand shopping, Mervyn's and the Commerce GA/Gilroy VF stores work well for cheap but durable wardrobe ideas. Plus, where the hell am I going to get GMLD's slippers next year? Many of the GMLD embroidery shirts came from Mervyn's because they were on sale, and we knew they'd wear better over time.

Another Mervyn's memory. American Airlines loses my luggage en route to Oklahoma City. They're not sure which time zone my luggage went to. I had to drive to Tulsa, and I was wondering where I'd find clothes in a strange city. Mako came up with the answer---Mervyn's! So, in 38 degree rain that eventually turned to ice, I go out and find a Mervyn's near my hotel (again with Mako's help), get 2 changes of clothes, and not only does my luggage show up (they drove it up from Oklahoma City) but I'm more than set for the trip and for future trips. That Mervyn's, though, is now probably a Kohl's or something else.

Speaking of luggage, my luggage, except for my beloved Tumi, has come from Mervyn's sales....

Adios Mervyn's. It's been fun. I'll be heading to the liquidation sale to see if there are any featherbeds (because the one I have I got from Mervyn's TEN YEARS AGO---and it's just broken in!) and Reebok shoes...which could be another Mervyn's story but I've opined long enough...(grin)

Have a wonderful weekend everyone....
