Name: Mami Hanasaki.
Age: 16
Star Sign: Capricorn; December 28.
Grade Average: A/B.
Orientation: Heterosexual.
History:
With the overwhelming rate of teenage suicide in Japan, Mami's older brother, Ichiro, once contributed to the statistics due to his stubborn attitude toward the harsh laws of the Japanese government. Mami was relatively close to Ichiro up until a few months before his end, as his teenage depression became an illness, and an illness gone untreated. Though his sickness was apparent, the event still hit her hard and sudden. Not long after did she, herself, attempt suicide by drowning in the bathtub. Making the careless mistake of leaving the door unlocked, however, she was caught by her mother and treated.
That was three years ago. Before then, she was a child who often indulged herself in things like manga and anime, video games, and online RPG's. After attempting suicide, she was encouraged to set out more and get into more physical activities, which ultimately raised her morale. The incident, she claims, was just a reaction to her brother's death, and she doesn't believe that she would try such a thing again.
Two years after that, it was her little sister's turn, who was diagnosed with cancer a year prior. A tumor had formed at the base of her skull and where her spinal column started.
While this put Mami into another bout of depression, she did nothing drastic as she had in reaction toward her brother. This is probably because she had seen her sister's death coming and was able to get her few months of time with her. She tends to get uncomfortable at the mentioning of her siblings, so she prefers to play it off as if she was a single child from the start.
Mami herself expressed interest in attending a boarding school.
Appearance:
Mami is a fairly short girl who stands at all of 5'2", with a body that's more developed in the hips, compared to her chest. Considering her extracurricular activities, she has a fairly fit body, although her sense of balance seemingly couldn't get any worse.
She dresses modestly and fashionably, and she likes to play with her hair, which is dyed variants of brown. For activity she clips her bangs from her face and ties back her hair. She wears her uniform with minimal modifications, although some days she will go without tucking in her shirt, or she'll have the first set of buttons unbuttoned. She might wear unnatural fingernail polish or one too many bracelets, but overall she tends to present herself properly. In her wardrobe are also plenty of athletic apparel, worn for most outdoor activity.
Like any teenaged girl, Mami can be self-conscious at times, but overall she is comfortable with herself.
Personality:
Polite, conservative, reserved, and a little shy, Mami is cool and collected where she sits and enjoys watching the eccentricities and idiosyncrasies of others around her. She does have her sense of humor and room for imagination, but it's all about time, place, and who she is with.
Though polite she may be, Mami also has her priorities in check and does not allow herself to be pushed around. She has a small bite, and what venom she has resides in her bark. She has a firm foot and an intolerance for rudeness towards her friends. When it is clear that one feels antipathy for her, Mami assumes a second path so that confrontation is avoided. When confronted, she maintains composure.
She has potential academically and is one of the few students that actually studies for her tests, and even goes so far as to make study sessions with her friends. Mami has an uncanny ability to organize things in her mind, giving her the leadership quality to direct large groups (and thus her position in the Nerd Herd.)
Romantically, Mami is inexperienced and pretty dumb and clueless.
Notable Interests:
Riding bikes. Dogs.
Strengths:
- Strong work-ethic. Whenever Mami starts something, her agenda is practically written in stone. Once she sets her mind on something, she allows herself to sidetrack only minimally.
- High morale. Along with her work ethic, she isn't much of a complainer. Though she isn't particularly cheerful about hard work, either, she at least knows that whining won't do anything, and she tries to pass that knowledge on whenever she is in a team effort.
- Self-contained/Composed. Whether she's ecstatic or deeply offended, she is good at containing them both. That is not to say that she holds a façade-- she is simply calm and ready to unleash the same energy into other things, like sports, or she will save whatever pent-up energy for close friends.
- Athletic. Mami is often found outside and going for a run, attempting to ride a bike, playing with or walking a dog. She has interest in sports, and while the only team she is on is the school's softball team, she enjoys getting together with some of her teammates after school and playing some other types of sport.
Weaknesses:
- Selfless. In most cases, Mami is going to put others before herself. She hates asking for anything, and is humble and timid when she does. She doesn't like to take, and will more often than necessary give. She'll willingly put the worst of many responsibilities on her own shoulders in a group effort, which can often lead to stress and anxiety.
- Germophobic & Hemophobic. Everywhere she goes, there are always going to be hand wipes and cleansers packed away in a pocket, a bag, etc. In softball she hides a little packet in her cap and a few in her pockets so that she can clean her hands in the dugout. She also carries with her nail clippers and breath fresheners. Every morning she cleans off her desk with a lemon-scented wipe, and she absolutely refuses to share a drink, chapstick, her mitt, earphones, and everything in between. Most tend to recognize this as a familiar quirk of hers.
In the presence of blood, she can simply become anxious or become paralyzed, depending on how bad and how much blood there is. She is extremely uppity about treating her own wounds, be it a scrape or a gash.
Her germophobia kicked in to the extreme upon entering boarding school, whereas she only had a mild case while she was living at home. Her hemophobia gradually got worse and worse after her sister's death, and now she is careful about the movies that she watches.
- Lenient. Mami tends to give people the benefit of the doubt quite a few times, no matter what their track record may recall. She likes to think that everybody has their reasons for what they do, and she is willing to think that their reason is legit.
- Clumsy. Despite her active participation in sports, she also tends to be a little balance-challenged. Luckily, she can keep her footing when it matters most of the time, but balance has always been an issue for her, whether she's trying to walk in a straight line or ride a bike. She only walks one or two dogs at a time for this reason. Her in-field position in softball compliments this as well.
Overnight Bag:
Hand wipes. Hand cleansers. Bare essentials. Toiletries. iPod and charger. Notebooks. Various snack foods. Puzzle books.
Family:
Shitaro Hanasaki -- Father. Shitaro is the bacon-bringer of the family, working in a typical office environment that specializes in office computer software. She tends to be a Daddy's Girl and hangs on his arm whenever they go out together, and she likes to play catch with him in good weather during her visits.
Chizuru Hanasaki -- Mother. Chizuru runs a small restaurant that serves as the first story of their home. Most customers go there for a few drinks and a meal, but seldom does Chizuru make anything gourmet if it's not a special occasion. Mami used to help serve when she lived there, and does help out whenever she visits.
Ichiro Hanasaki -- Older Brother. Deceased. (Suicide)
Eri Hanasaki -- Younger Sister. Deceased. (Cancer)
+Two cats: Gao and Mao. Both long-haired Japanese bobtails. Mao is red and white; Gao is black and white.
Extra Curricular Activities:
- School's softball team. (Second bat, switch-hitter. First base.)
- Walks dogs on weekends, usually on Sunday's.
Chosen Subject:
Unknown.
Teacher Observations:
"Mami is a nice girl, albeit quiet. She's bright and does her work fast and efficiently, and she is also helpful when it comes to school activities, but she lacks in classroom participation, which could easily affect her grades in the long run."
Class Behavior:
Mami does a good job at following directions and likes to watch whatever commotion erupts in the classroom (providing it doesn't get entirely wild), but hardly ever does she partake in any of it. In addition, she is quick to help out with decorating for school festivals and such, but when it comes to interaction within a group or a class discussion, she doesn't speak out very much.
Classroom Clique:
Leader-like figure of the Nerd Herd.
Friends/Relationships:
Emi Kuribayashi:
Mami and Emi don't exactly share a heavy and wondrous story; they were once paired up with each other for a class project. They ended up liking each other enough to continue working with each other on future assignments until they developed into best friends. In Emi, Mami finds sheer sweetness and comfort, which is what Emi seems to find in Mami. She likes cuddling up to her as a friend and sharing stories and outings, and whatever else it is that best friends do. Before Ryuichi, Emi had a little girl crush on Mami. Mami had and still has no idea.
Taylor Takahashi:
One of her better friends who's a little more outgoing than the rest. Mami and Taylor started out study buddies until they developed into a tight and dependable friendship. As one of the few that Mami confides in, Taylor was there when Kinuka gossiped about her deceased siblings, and one of the few (if not only, besides Emi) who saw how truly hurt she was because of it.
Sayuri Ono:
Another good friend of Mami's, Sayuri is also a quiet and reserved girl who Mami had to sort of force out of her shell. Every once in a while, she would walk over to her and strike up conversation or invite her places, and it would usually be hit or miss. During one school festival, though, Mami stuck with Sayuri, regardless of all chances to do something probably a little more exciting with other people. She remains a source of comfort for Sayuri, but that isn't to say that she'll show her own weaknesses around her.
Taichi Nawabe:
They share a somewhat unique relationship. Mami often visits him with a broken bicycle, and Taichi fixes it while letting a few teases slide. Just like that. Taichi also happens to be the boy who Ryuichi is subtly matching her up with without her knowledge. [Under construction.]
Kinuka Asano:
Possibly the only person Mami does find herself openly resenting. When Kinuka gossiped (rather loudly at that) about her deceased siblings, she wasn't going to have any of that. She confronted her in the hall later with a simple request for an explanation, in which Kinuka replied with a good taunt or so. That never answered Mami's question and therefore her response failed, so she waited. With that, Kinuka burst into full bitch mode, until Mami gave her a good firm slap. Teachers broke them up after that. They can be seen passing along a few snide comments toward one-another.
Ryuichi Nakano:
Through Emi, Mami and Ryuichi have formed a decent relationship. They aren't particularly close, but most of their conversations usually end up forming into a friendly debate. As far as Ryuichi goes as a boyfriend for her best friend, she approves. She doesn't go out of her way to have any significant part in their relationship other than that. She is unaware that Ryuichi is playing matchmaker with her and Taichi in the shadows.
Kentaro Fukushima:
A fairly good friend. Mami is someone who Kentaro perceived as to be a genuinely nice person, so they'll share a few outings and do things every once in a while.
Seikou Ishida:
Even though Mami thinks that Seikou seems to be a very nice boy, and even though Seikou maybe has a little crush on her, Mami is under the impression that Seikou actually dislikes her, due to his tongue-tied tendencies and frequent glances. Oops.
Raiden Shindou:
Raiden is also a character who tends to lose it around Mami (as he seems to with any girl). Usually she's just confused and/or plays along, but overall she thinks he's a pretty nice and charming guy. He often attempts the whole 'flirting' thing with her and tries to compliment her when he sees her; Mami finds herself genuinely flattered but a little too embarrassed to bask in his compliments. Usually she'll see him at the pool when she's in for the day, and when she was a spectator of his CPR procedure for Hanako Iso, a part of her thought that it was cool that he could save a life. Then she wondered if he, being a boy, enjoyed giving CPR. Just curious.
Lily Ogawa:
Lily and Mami get along. They're close and reliable, but not to an extreme. Every once in a while they'll count on each other to do something, they stick up for each other, and they'll take part in idle chit-chat. Sometimes Lily will visit her mother's restaurant on weekends, and when Mami helps out it's nice to see a familiar face. And then there are times when Mami has to nudge Lily in class so that she'll wake up for something important (though usually she'll just let her sleep). She remembers the math class incident when she woke up claiming that she didn't have an abortion, and sometimes she'll playfully tease her about it or ask what in the world was with that.
Itsuo Tateno:
At first their relationship was a bit shaky. Because of Itsuo's quirky communication tendencies, Mami was a little uncomfortable talking to him for a while. It wasn't until Itsuo showed up for his therapy session a little early and overheard a certain name coming from her. Later he talked about it online with Mami, and while the discussion was brief, and while it hasn't been brought up since, Mami's comfortable with him now. Besides being on the basis of casual friends, Mami's found that he's not as scary as she thought he was.
Miyuki Ishida:
In a nutshell, Mami is plain fascinated. She's a good student who manages to live on the wild side, and live the life that she'll never be able to explore for herself. Mami observes and admires her attitude, but aside from that, there isn't really any significant relationship.
Hisa Aimono:
Like most people, Mami does think that Hisa is pretty annoying-- though she is polite enough to tolerate her, sometimes even with a smile. Because she isn't particularly popular, Hisa regards her as a "backup friend," and Mami is perfectly okay with that.
Yoko Shimzuki:
Mami and Yoko are athletic rivals to some extent. Yoko is bent on one-upping Mami, often taunting her and teasing in hopes that she'll mess up. Mami admits that Yoko is formidable and just tries not to care, but in a bad mood she'll subconsciously end up wanting to put Yoko in her place. Elsewhere, Yoko is prone to pick on the likes of her more shy friends, and when Mami is there she'll make sure it doesn't go past one insult.
Ryuji Miyosaka:
Mami is a bit wary of this character. Carefully choosing her words around him, she's cautious after he once hurt her feelings pretty deep (though on accident; he apologized afterwards). She loves the guy when they manage a short and sweet talk, but he tends to say the wrong things. Way to go.
Kaoru Ishibashi:
Mami and Kaoru don't have very much to do with each other. They're in completely different cliques, and they both carry disinterest for one-another. Occasionally Mami will oppose Kaoru for the sake of Emi, but even that is a rarity.
Suzuka Otomo:
Suzuka is pretty high-strung to Mami, a bit so that she's slightly put-off by the girl. They get along on a fundamental level, but just plain aren't past acquaintances.
