“What are you looking at?” Will asked Jack, who was peering intently into the water.

Jack didn’t answer, just rose and fixed his still keen gaze on Will. Without breaking his stare he asked without preamble, “Have you heard the story of Narcissus?”

Flippant words were swallowed unsaid under the smoldering eyes burning through his own, into his soul. ( Read more... )

Becoming what you don't want to become, but compelled to do so, by virtue of what you've become.

I can easily see how Jack wouldn't care for what he saw (he seems to spend a lot of time avoiding that detail) and would do what he could to prevent Will from following that same downward spiral.

Too many of us are far too uncomfortable with said reflection.

I agree. It is a truly discomforting thing, coming face to face with your own shortcomings. And to see another, one who has a choice, choosing that path, because of you, that is an eye opener.

I believe though that Will is quite intelligent and knows what he is choosing. It will need to be addressed still, but the die was cast, perhaps before Will was even born.

Thanks for reading between the lines...

Beautiful triple drabble! I love the romance that this implies and how suddenly concerned Jack is for Will. Plus, the very clever weaving of Narcissus was a very nice touch that brought this all together :)

Great work! I'm so glad I had time to stop by and read it today! I do miss being able to read your writing!

Thank you. I don't think it was a sudden thing on Jack's part, but the point where he could no longer deny his feelings, and his fears.

You managed to connect the dots nicely, and see under the layers to what was really driving Jack to reveal what was bothering him.

Congrats on finishing school, it must be a relief!
