I think Jack's objective was to take Will somewhere that was far removed from society's rules and stigmas, in order to make his point. The fact there was no where else to go, seeing how they were already nowhere, just helped matters along.

A bit of housekeeping: "That were just an observation." I think you meant "was" rather than "were" unless it was purposeful.
