Summary: A glimpse of Jack being a pirate, gleaned from my current series of stories about Jack and his favorite wenches, Scarlett and Giselle.

The cry comes from above. “Sail ahoy! Three masts.”

Jack scans the horizon with his spyglass. “Colors?” he calls to his lookout.

A pause, then: “French. Looks t’ be a merchantman, riding low.”

Jack grins. “Then French we’ll be! Mr. Gibbs! Hoist the colors of those bloody frogs!  Man the windward sheets! We’ll be pointing hard!”

Gibbs scurries to the chest and soon the French flag is flying high.

When the Pearl catches the slower, heavily laden vessel Jack gives the orders. “Let’s show ‘em our true colors! Alert the larboard gun crews. Send a shot across their bow!”

The message is relayed to the gun deck below as the Black Pearl bears down on her prey. If the French ship had been uncertain, a loud boom and puff of smoke announced the Pearl’s true intent, her French ensign being replaced by a black flag, with grinning skull, raised high.
