Two things:
1.
Republicans are invading the Twin Cities! 2.
This is scary. "The bill forbids treatment of detainees that would constitute war crimes - such as torture, rape and biological experiments - but gives the president the authority to decide which other techniques interrogators can use."
"However, during a heated debate, Democrat senators accused the administration of tearing up 200 years of legal standards by removing detainees rights such as habeas corpus - the right to challenge their own detention."
""This bill gives an administration that lobbied for torture exactly what it wanted," said Senator John Kerry."
Think about it. Under the Patriot Act you can basically be detained if someone thinks you're a terrorist. With this bill, you can't legally argue against that. And you can be interrogated in any fashion the President wants. The same President who has brought us from our all time highest surplus to our all time highest deficit, who is still getting people killed in Iraq to find his mythical WMDs, who is pro-capital punishment.
And all this can be done legally.
I don't know what I find sadder, the fact that this bill exists at all, or that we're all going to read and hear about it, make our little poo-bah noises, and then turn back to stressing out about where we're going to go after the Homecoming dance.
