Basically it's a personalised Web-based radio (implemented with Flash) - the users can create several (up to 100) "stations" to play music similar to the groups/songs they specify. What's special about this site is that the decision of which music is "similar" is made with a sophisticated music analysing software called Music Genome Project, which compares songs according to a number of parameters (not according to the common "genres" or artists). It's possible to tune the stations further by approving or disapproving on the songs currently playing or by adding new music for the similarity algorithms. There's also a feature of song bookmarking, sharing stations between users, and probably lots of other stuff I haven't tried yet.
After a short "demo", the (free) registration is required; formally it's only for the US residents, and the postal code is needed for confirmation - but the discriminated majority always can pretend they're US residents temporarily living abroad (fortunately Pandora doesn't restrict IPs ;) and pick a random postal code from the list of world zipcodes.
