The Lemon Went Kaput! And updated shabbos menu.

Nov 05, 2009 22:03

All the food already cooked for Shabbos. The last few things- beets in the pressure cooker on the stove, eggplant charring in the oven on broiler setting. Eggplant is done. I turn off the oven, hear a loud pop, smell a burnt smell, and all the lights in the house go off. Absolute silence. The oven just shorted the electricity in the house. Again. (Everyone warned me that this wasnt a good brand of oven, but i bought it because it was cheap. Eh. You get what you pay for.)
I make sure all the settings on the oven point to off, then go to the circuit breaker to turn the electricity back on. Only this time when I go back to the oven, I can tell something is different. The other times, there was no loud pop and a burning smell. My suspicions were vindicated. The button on the stove that turns on the sparks to ignite the flame is not working. Nor is either oven- top or bottom. Guess the electricity on the oven is completely dead.
But at least all my food for shabbos was made already. The only thing I had left to cook was rice. When the beets finished, I put the rice on the same flame without turning it off, because I knew that once off, i wouldn't be able to ignite the flame again, even with a match, because of a certain safety feature on the oven. :-/

Updated shabbos menu based on my mood, leftovers from my freind's upsherim (party) that she dumped on me :-),  and what I found hiding in the back of the fridge:

Herbed Challah

Tuna loaf
Coleslaw
Lacto-fermented beets
Sauerkraut
Lacto-fermented ginger carrots
Onion salad
Matbucha
Techina
Chilbeh

Chicken soup with noodles (this time taking precaution so that it wouldn't spoil before shabbos like it did last week)

Meat Loaf
Brown rice
Gravy (to go on both of the above)
Swiss chard and tofu quiche (tofu homemade as well)
Potato kugel

No desert. :-D
