I've eaten things high in vitamin C when sick before, but last night was the first time i truly dabbled in herbal medicine. I've been reading different people's blogs that talk about their forays in herbal remedies. A lot of the herbs are ones that I already have in the house, most of which are part of my extensive extensive spice rack...
Moo was burning up last night with a fever. I tried giving him paracematol/acamol/tylenol but it had no effect on the fever. Trying to cool him with a wet wash cloth wasnt either working.
I was reading up on bulkherbstore.com about different medicinal uses of herbs, and it was saying that cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and ecchinacia have antibiotic properties.
I made him a really strong tea by seeping the aforementioned spices in boiling water. I had them all in the house, for use in cooking (ecchinacia wasnt for cooking), and he drank it all very willingly.
I also gave Moo some garlic to eat. I fed him slivers of 3 cloves of garlic- his sensory integration disorder specifically in his mouth made him not taste the raw garlic as strongly as someone else would. Even so, he didn't like the raw garlic so much, but he was a champ and ate all 3 cloves, taking long draws from his bottle of tea when the flavor got too intense for him.
He also had an orange...
And by morning he's totally fine. His fever went away after drinking the tea. Less than 9 hours later, you wouldn't know that he was burning up with a fever last night.
My first foray into the world of herbal medicine was a success.
I also was reading that olive leaf is a natural antibiotic. As is sage. Both of which i'm able to get easily enough- olive trees grow like mad around here, i can make my own infusion of olive leaf infusion to deal with things that need antibiotics. And my mother grows sage in her garden.
Next time, i'll add both sage and olive leaf to the tea.
I say this is definitely fun. And effective. And cheap, because i had it all in the house already.
I gotta try this again.
ETA: And here i wrote the whole post, forgetting the punch line, the reason why i decided to post this. Moo smells disgusting! All the garlic is coming out of his pores... Nasty! He is breathing garlic, sweating garlic, etc... Uch, how long till this passes? At least the garlic had a good effect in addition to the nasty smell...
