How was our trip to Texas, you ask? Fabulous! Warm, sunny, rednecky -- everything I was expecting.
But seriously, folks, my mom's email below really sums it up well. (And for some context: SeaLab, in Corpus Christi, is where the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network houses their stranded dolphins. I used to be a volunteer for them, and I worked with two dolphins in my time. I'm one of their most committed volunteers so they let me drag my whole family there!)
From Mom, to family:
"We really enjoyed Joy and Brendan’s short visit !!!! I think they had enough breakfast tacos to last them for awhile. We all went to Catfish Charlie’s, and met Diana there for a nice dinner and chat. I had to take Joy to my Vietnam nail shop where she got a manicure and pedicure with little flowers on her big toes, like me. On our way out of the shop, she insisted on stopping for a fruit cup from the nearby Palatera. New York just doesn’t have many of these things, yet.
We spent a day out at the Rainey’s. Took lots of food, some wine and an ice cream cake from TCBY because it was James’ birthday. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and windy. It didn’t keep Joy, Brendan and Don from fishing.
Joy took us over to Sea Lab one day. What a terrific experience !! There was a Rough Tooth Dolphin named Noah in the tank and he had been nursed back to magnificent health from a horrible state. When found he was thin and had extremely swollen gums from a hook. He could not take solid food at first. He really got to all of us because he swam over to the side of the tank as soon as he saw us, to show us how he could swim on his side, back, through hula hoops and over long pieces of float. He really has attitude ! After he was fed, he would rest his head on a piece of the long float and take a nap. They think he will do fine in the open sea. The problem is for them to find another pod of the uncommon Rough Tooths.
Joy, just got your email and am so glad you got back to NYC alright. Sounds like you guys had a nice Hill Country trip."
Yes, mom, we did. Thanks. And true to our wandering hearts, we DID make it Mexico! Arribe! We drove to Del Rio, and walked across to Ciudad Acuna. We ate some nachos, drank some beer ("Uno mas cerveza, por favor") and bought silver jewelry. I also took a picture of a beggar lady and I think she gave me Ojo and I may now be cursed forever. Anyway it was like 85 degrees and I loved sweating. I never sweat in New York. They don't know what hot weather is!
We also went to this freakishly authentic honky-tonk in the piss-ant town of London, TX. Somehow, they have a web site. This place is just as white Texas as you can get. www.londondancehall.com
Anyone desperate to see our trip photos should let me know. I can send you our Snapfish album. They include a lot of pictures of Noah the dolphin.
