The Peepshow was an enormous success!!! I was really kind of concerned that we wouldn't get much traffic because 1) this venue is a new one on the Artwalk, so regulars wouldn't be used to going there, 2) it's upstairs, and kind of hard to find, and 3) it rained. However, the place was packed from the opening until closing, and people loved the exhibit! It was so cool to see people in business suits coming in and just rolling, laughing at the video. I didn't get any "WTF?" expressions and nobody was offended. That's good, although any reaction is a reaction, and that's what you really want with art. The worst thing would be for people to completely ignore it. We had a little theater set up for people to sit and watch the 5 minute video, and some people stayed to watch it play over and over and over again, laughing hysterically and dragging their friends back in to see it.
That being said, I only sold a coupld still photos from the video. But at least I'm getting out there. It's not exactly a marketable thing.
The coolest thing was getting out of the exhibit and hearing people talking about it at other exhibits. That's when you really get to know whether your piece worked or not. I did have a few people point to me from across the street and say "Hey, aren't you the Peepshow lady?" I'm not sure I want to be known as the Peepshow Lady, but whatever.
I got to meet a lot of really cool artists and talk about the artistic climate in WV. I got a few business cards from gallery owners and exhibit curators, and a few people asked me to be in upcoming shows (including two shows that really interested me -- one having to do with pillows, and another with an Apocalypse theme.) I really didn't expect to be taken seriously as an artist with this exhibit because it was really kind of silly, but I think it was different enough from the typical Charleston WV art that it stood out. I'm down with that. :)
Most importantly, the other art was friggin' AMAZING! I spent the entire evening just gawking at the awesomeness of the local scene. There were more established artists with work around, and several newcomers to the scene. Everything was great, and there were so many things that seemed so "big city" compared to a lot of the art you usually see around here. I think Charleston is waking up, and I feel really lucky to be around to watch it happen.
Oh, and you'll be happy to know that I felt pretty and appropriately dressed. Thanks to everyone who sent wardrobe help. :)
