Isaac has been showing a lot of interest in new words now that he can read. (he can READ!) He's always asking me what this or that word means, often words in books we've read a zillion times, where I guess previously he just ignored them or assumed their meanings from context. It's pretty cool. He's also asking more about how things work in general. The other day he heard me tell Ruthie that I needed to eat so I could make more nursie for her, and Isaac said, "how do you make milk?" Umm...I didn't really know how to answer that! yikes. lol.
He is also showing interest in baseball. We watch the games on TV and I've been explaining a bit about the rules of the game. Isaac can now identify most of the Red Sox players by sight (although he has some trouble pronouncing some of them, like Pedroia) and observed all on his own that Mike Lowell's last name is the same as the name of the street we live on. :) His favorite player remains Big Papi, of course. And the other night when Jason Varitek came up to bat, I asked Isaac, "Do you know who that is?" and Ruthie yelled out, "It's Manny!" LOL!! Then I tried to get her to say Jason Varitek, which came out kind of like "dason yariyek." hee hee.
Speaking of Ruthie, her vocabulary continues to explode. Almost every day she uses words I hadn't realized that she knew. She still LOVES to sing and her daycare teachers are always telling me how enthusiastic she is at song time. She's big into imitative behavior, as typical of toddlers -- always trying to blow her own nose, wipe her own butt, hold my umbrella for me, and so forth. The other night she laid a package of napkins on top of her fork and said "the fork sleeping!" So we all said night-night to the fork, and a moment later she yelled "Wake up fork!" and yanked the napkins away. LOL!
Also last night I was holding her and cooking, and Ruthie grabbed my face with both hands and looked me in the eye and said "Yisten to Oothie's words!" (which is something I say to Isaac when I really want to be sure he's listening to me -- "listen to my words") So I said "okay, I'm listening." And Ruthie goes, "Going away!" (or it might have been "no go away" or "no away"??) and wrapped her arms tightly around me for a hug. LOL. I don't know what that was about. She then repeated the entire sequence several more times. Okay! Whatever! :)
Ruthie is also getting good with numbers. There's a big map at the bus stop where we wait for the bus; it shows the surrounding area and all the buses and their routes. There are a LOT of buses that go through Davis Square. Ruthie LOOOOVES this map. She climbs up onto the bench next to it and points to all the numbers and says what they are. She has already mastered the art of adding "-ty" to the end of a number when it's in the tens place, i.e., she knows that eight seven is pronounced "eighty-seven." Genius, I tell you. Genius!!
Ruthie also has this habit of repeating things a zillion times, at least if they make an impression. Like the other day when we got Isaac's and my hair cut, and afterward Isaac got a lollipop so Ruthie of course got a lollipop too. She said "my yollipop yummy!" about a thousand times. Every night when we go to bed, I turn off the light, and Ruthie says, "it's dark!" The other night as I was getting into her bed with her and saying "yep, it's dark all right," I was thinking to myself, geez, she always says that. And just then Isaac piped up, "mama, she ALWAYS says that!" LOL.
After Isaac's haircut I told him that he looked like a whole different kid. So then after mine, he told me that I looked like "a whole different grownup." LOL!
And for the day or two after that, Ruthie said "mama haircut! ahgoo haircut!" about a million times. ;)
OK, I have more, but I gotta run :)
