a day

A couple of years ago orbitalmechanic found something on her husband's back that turned out to be melanoma (skin cancer). Luckily it was caught early and they removed it and he is fine. But it really got me to thinking: as a single person, who knows my back well enough and sees it often enough to notice if there were something new and/or different? No one. And recently Ruthie started commenting on the moles on my back, and I noticed a new dark spot under my left breast that hadn't been there before, so I decided to do something about it. I talked to my doctor and she gave me a referral to dermatology. This was probably back in May-ish. The first opening they had was in November, so I took it because, you know, it wasn't like an immediate emergency or anything.

So the appointment was today and I was late on account of a really annoying car accident (minor; no one hurt; minimal damage to both cars). I was really pissed at the guy who hit me, not just for hitting me, but also because the first thing he did was pull out his cell and call 911. Argh! If no one was hurt (n.b. he didn't ask me whether I was hurt...then again I didn't ask him either) and the damage is minor, you don't need to call the cops! But of course once he had called them, I had to wait around for them to arrive and say "you don't need us." Grumble. So while we were doing that, in the pouring rain I might add, I called the dermatology office and told them what was going on. The woman said somewhat skeptically that they would probably have to reschedule for another day if I were going to be more than 10-15 minutes late, and that I should call them back once I got sorted out.

I was really irritated thinking that I'd have to put this thing off for another six months. I mean, again, it's not that it's anything super-pressing, I didn't actually think there was anything really worrisome, but I just hated the idea of having waited this long just to be stopped by something like this. You know?

Anyway, the cops came and told us they weren't going to do a report, and the guy and I exchanged info and I went home to get my stuff, and found a message from the dermatology office saying that the doctor would squeeze me in whenever I could get there. Phew.

So I called my boss and told him about the accident and got his okay to work from home. Then I went to the dermatology appointment where, apparently, I was the most interesting thing that had happened there all day ;) because everyone seemed to have heard about the chick who was going to be late because of a car accident. They all asked about it and I had to explain repeatedly that it was no big deal. heh.

The doctor herself was very nice, and the actual appointment took only a few minutes. She looked carefully at all of my moles/birthmarks/etc. and declared that none of them were worrisome, but said that since I have so many of them, I should come in every two years or so just to have them checked out again. That was pretty much what I expected, so that was good.

And then I came home to decompress a bit and try to get some work done...sigh.
