We finished the Anatomy and Physiology section today. My average was a 97.5%. We lost two people out of our class of 25. One girl nobody really knew. She just came into the class for this section. But I was partners with the other girl when we did our nurse aid clinical. She's 23 and was one of the youngest in our class. She has two kids, a full time job, and an asshole for a husband. At least that's what I've heard. In this program you have to have 77% to pass. I didn't think she was going to make it, but she kept on coming in and trying. It was sad to watch her pack up her stuff and go. She was crying and a lot of other people were too. After she left and the teacher was in the other room doing some paperwork, my classmates started talkin' about how we need to stick together and help each other because we didn't want to see anybody else pack up and leave like that.
An LPN license might not seem like much to some, but it's sooooo much to everybody in my class. It's a job skill. It's honest work. After a couple years of experience, it's the opportunity to make twenty dollars an hour just about anywhere in the country we want to move. AND we can continue on to get an RN. You're lookin' at about thirty bucks an hour then! But it's not just the money. My god, it's the job. It's honest, lifesaving work.
My class is a beautiful mixture of people. There are two "white" Miami girls, a handful of people born in Cuba, about the same amount of people born in Haiti, a couple people who are Dominican by culture, a girl from Chili, a girl from Columbia, the woman who sits next to me is from Guiana, and then there are about six black people native to Miami. There are six men.
I have grown to love these people over the last three months.
Tamika missed her period about a month ago and I knew it the day after. I knew the day after that that she was pregnant. I knew the day after that that she was going to keep it. She showed up yesterday with an engagement ring on her finger. Her soon to be husband should graduate the RN program at the community college in June. I'm really happy for her and pray that she can get through this program, even with having a baby. If she can't though, they will take her back pretty close where she left off....as long as she doesn't wait too long.
See, that's the thing about this program, the school doesn't get their money from the government, for each individual student, until they have passed the program, the state boards, and have either landed a job or enrolled in continuing education. That's so awesome to me. Yes, they want everyone to pass, but they've got to have a good pass rate on state boards too or the school loses its accreditation.
So anyway.....I'm done with A&P. We have until the end of next week to cover a small portion of Human Growth and Development, and then we finally get started with PN1.
Goddess bless America:)
