It saddens me to report that my cat Thomas is very ill.
He had a serious eye infection in March, which he seemed to recover from. However since May he then slowly lost his appetite and a great deal of weight, and was showing some strange behaviour walking around the house bumping into objects. A few weeks ago we took him to the vet who confirmed that Thomas had lost his sight in not the one, but both eyes. This was attributed to high blood pressure but could not be confirmed since he would not be still long enough to have his blood pressure taken.
The vet did not have any concrete answers for us as to the loss of appetite but a full set of blood and urine testing later showed all positive results except for two liver enzymes which were higher than they should have been - so some cause to be concerned for his liver. She also packed us some high calorie recovery food. He liked that well enough and seemed to be responding to it. Then she had us start him on a set of pills but unfortunately it seemed to have made him lose his appetite again and this time he is just not responding to anything. He is very lethargic and we have resorted to force-feeding him with a syringe.
We took him back to the vet today and she did another blood test on his liver which showed that one liver enzyme was back to normal but the other one was even higher. The vet is now puzzled (great) since that particular enzyme should not have affected his appetite and instructed us to remove him from the first medication (which we have done) and gave him a pill to help encourage his appetite (which it has not done). She has promised to do some research and get back to us by tomorrow, but I have a sad feeling in my heart about this whole situation.
