And What is the Lesson We've Learned Today?

Aug 15, 2011 16:55

My sister's van broke down. So she borrowed our back up mini van.

The 13th was my Tupperware party. She came for a little while and then left to go to the Demo Derby because her birthday was the next day, Sunday.

I get a call at 5:30 am sunday morning. I think it's Martha, my youngest sister. She says, "Terra, I've been in a bad car accident. I'm covered in blood. It's not mine (Cue my heart attack stopping). But Shane was thrown from the vehicle and he's in critical condition."

So she asks me to get a hold of Shane's mom. And I tell her I'm on the way. I leave, I go wake Shane's mom up. I tell her. I told her I was on my way to the hospital and she can ride with me if she wants.

On the drive, I get calls saying that it's not Martha, it's Susie. I swear to God, I thought it was Martha. I guess we all sound so much a like and with the sobbing, I thought it was Marti. And I couldn't figure out for the life of me why Marti was with Shane! Susie made much more sense.

We get to the hospital and it was bad. She's fine. She has bruises and scrapes. Air bag and seat belt burn. No broken bones, no stitches needed. She was wearing her seat belt. She was drunk.

So was Shane. And he was driving. And he WAS NOT wearing his seat belt.

They were going down a dirt road at about 60 miles per hour. Around some S curves. Around the last curve instead of following the curve, he went straight. Into a tree. The van bounced off the tree and jerked sideways, throwing him out of the driver's side window. He was mostly out the window, with his leg caught under the steering wheel and over the window. Luckily, the bank on the other side of the ditch was high and someone had just dumped grass clippings so, he wasn't hanging there. He was actually on the ground. At least part of him was.

Susie was disoriented. At first she thought he had got out of the car to check the damage. So she started looking for him. Her door wouldn't open, (Thank God. She would've fell out about 6 feet to the ground. They had imbedded the van into the bank of the ditch like a fricking fisbee in a dirt pile.) Finally she see's his leg, unhooks it and climbs out the window. She couldn't find a phone and it was dark out. So she started slapping his face trying to get him awake. Finally, she finds her emergency phone in her purse. When she opens it and the light hit him she freaked. He had a gash on his chin that made it look like he had another set of lips it was so wide. And he was squirting blood out of a wound in his head. She took of his shirt and held it to his head. She had just enough battery to call 911. They got cut off once. But she managed to get them back and tell them the crossroads. The ambulance found them and took them to the hospital.

Shane is okay. The bleeding in his brain stopped. He will be in ICU for a couple more days at least. He has no broken bones. He got a ticket for operating while intoxicated. Susie is fine. Like I said, she has some bruises and scrapes, aches and pains. She's stiff. But she's alive.

And today, we came to the hospital so she could see him. On the way we stopped at the Collision place and checked out the van. We took pictures and I will post them later. I can't she walked away from that crash. I can't believe he or she is alive and that he isn't hurt worse than he is. It's an Honest To God Miracle.

It was my van they totaled. I told her that I'll worry about that later. Everyone's copacetic till they're out of the hospital. I'm not mad at anyone right now. Right now, I'm glad everyone is alive and has all their limbs. I'll be pissed later. I'll be pissed about my van. That she got into a vehicle with a drunk driver. That she let him drive my van drunk. That she didn't call someone for a ride. That will all piss me off in a few days. Right now, I feel relief.

And yes, this is the same Shane that beat the shit out of her. She says they are getting along for Logan (Their son). Whatever. Again, that's something for me to worry about later.

I brought her here so she could see him. They wouldn't let her see him yesterday. She needed to reassure herself that he is okay.

So the lessons we've learned today are as follows:

Seat belts, seat belts, seat belts! They are essential. They save lives. They keep you in your seat and not through a windshield.

Don't get in a vehicle when the driver is drunk.

Don't speed down dirt roads and hit trees.

Just sayin'.
