Tattoo revisited...

A friend of mine is getting her 2, 3 and 4th tattoos tomorrow (her astrological sign and the one for her daughter and for her son) and I'd be lyin' if I said I wasn't fiending to get my tattoo. I can practically taste the pain and hear the buzz of the needle. ARGH!

Anywho, I've been revisiting my tattoo idea. Funnily enough, the design I've come up is culled from images I've had saved on my computer for 2 years!!! Craziness.

I know not everyone is into the whole tattoo thing, but my other two tattoos mark big events/time periods in my life. This third one will likely be my last and it will commemorate Xan, myself and the kids. Important to me and hard to explain to anyone else. :) I'm going to do this one on my lower back. Not too huge, but larger than my other two tattoos.

Anywho, I'd like this in the center:

Can you see the hearts? Ok, now can you see the "X" in the center? It'll represent Xan at the center of my life - the focus of my heart and love. I love the "hidden" nature of the "X". I'm not a big one for tattooing names and such, but this is a perfect compromise. I'm thinking I'll have the outline of the X shadowed in green. Just a hint of highlight. The hearts...maybe the top and bottom one in red fading out to skin tone.

This is a simpler version of the above, but I think the hearts are too clear. I like the more hidden nature of the first one and the more complex knotwork:

So that incorporates me and Xan and our love. Very cool. Next up, the kids. I've always identified Adia with the color purple (she's cool and laid back like her Dad, hence the "cool" color) and Roark with the color orange (he tends to be more fiery like me). I want the tattoo to have the celtic feel (the knotwork) as well as a very organic feminine feel to represent the kids. Getting back to that whole circle of life, ashes to ashes, the animalness of bearing children - etc.

I'd like to incorporate organic elements like these vineworks:

I love the curvy, feminine feel here. Sensual and very alive.

This will always be one of my favorite images - the celtic tree of life rich with vinework - it feels so alive to me. It is one of the most perfect representations of my feelings regarding the circlular nature of life, death, love, etc that I've found. Way too complex fo r a good tattoo (without taking up my whole back) but I love the feel and essence of it.

This one is too raw. Too sharp and pointy, but it is kind of close to what I'm envisioning shape-wise. It is not alive enough - too symetrical.

Kind of closer to what I want but not open enough - too linear.

So the thought is to have the vine pattern tie into the hearts on the left and right side. Intertwine them some how so they connect with the ring of hearts. Have the leaves on each vine in green and the flower buds in purple for Adia and orange for Roark. We're all connected and they would be the life born of my love for Xan.

I can see it in my head, but I need to get it on paper. That is the frustrating part - I'm not much of a graphic artist! I'm so close to getting it all tied together and that is awesome. It is more personal than my original tree of life design, but it encompasses the feeling I'm going for more closely. I've had 90% of these images for almost 2 years so I feel confident that I'm picking something that I'll enjoy for the long term (kinda important when it comes to body art!).

I so want to get it done...today! But it shall have to wait. I need to get it mocked up on paper and take it to some tattoo artists and see what it would cost to get it done.

I'm so excited. I'm giddy like a little kid. :)
