I hate being in thumb-twiddle mode. I am monitoring two different meetings My usual “I’m here if you have an issue” meet is 8-5 every day and I am glad my coworkers make me take a lunch. I’ve become very good at identifying beeps and boops from various communication channels. But Google’s notification sound can be a chat in a meeting, chat on google mail, or an extension notification. Sometimes it feels like I’m doing the technical equivalent of scrambling for my underpants trying to find out what just squawked at me.
And this week the “hey we are going to classrooms so can you be on call so we can test remote functions” which is sporadic and if I’m not careful, goes dead after 40 minutes (I’m the host)
I really need to physically get back to work, so many tiny issues that I could solve in minutes if I was physically there.
Frank heard back from his cousin and Aunt G*s story is a long one. We talked last night and she was “back on” for help with a move. But the letter from his cousin has confirmed a lot of what we suspected and that we couldn’t help even if we wanted to due to COVID restrictions. It’s going to be a new set of guidelines for our future relationship with her. I’m calling off the kind folks who offered to help.
In good news, I think I smelled El Stinko body wash today. It smelled like grapes to me-ever so faintly. (It’s supposed to be floral) I am trying a trick a friend suggested to “retrain” my nose by exposing it to four strong scents a day to give the brain/senses a little test every day. I’ve been using this as an excuse to eat spicy/strong food that doesn’t give me digestive issues. This includes hot brown mustards, Szechuan, horseradish, and more. I can “kind of,” smell bread cooking and I think I tasted Rosemary seasoning. Maybe wishful thinking, I don’t know.
Someone sent us a huge box of oranges I’m trying to eat them as fast as I can but if you want some and you’re local …I discovered there is a second layer, OMG.
We’ve started watching “Ghosts” and so far they’ve done some nice trope subversion and been good about keeping things moving. I feared too much cringe humor but they keep it to a minimum. I think a family could watch this but there are some quick adult jokes. The episodes are short and I’ll probably be through it before the end of next week. (HBO)
I’m behind in my reading so I’ll sneak a cheater Graphic Novel in there. For books, halfway through “What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker.” I love his writing style and it feels like you are sitting in a room with Damon Young, chatting. I *devoured* “The Conjurer”, the last of the Vine Witch series. It was a nice wrap-up, beautifully written but not full of surprises. I’m so happy to be focused enough to read again but my day-to-day is still a scattered mess and I still forget to make bread (bread machine, I have no need to rediscover my connection to fussy yeasts and arm-killing labor in our tiny kitchen, thank you)
Still can’t do podcasts. I feel like I do a disservice to the speaker if I’m not focused. They may be fine for long trips but those aren’t happening. Not sure how to fit them into my day.
Working together from home definitely has made for some interesting habits and events. I now have to remember not to belch with gusto. Frank’s stomach was making noises (it sounded like a muffled, irritable conversation with two Terry Gilliam characters) and I had my headphones on. It was only when he walked away, we figured out what it was. I suspect that my need to use the F word is building up in a side universe somewhere and will be unleashed at a bad time. I accidentally disrupted a meeting when my avocado fell on my keyboard. Fortunately most didn’t notice :) Frank made me an amazing sandwich but he didn’t realize that I cut the slices in half, then make a sandwich. So I got a mega-huge house sammich.
The lady at the Chinese restaurant is amused that I have been “Frank” for the last two times.
I hope that not worrying about Aunt G will let me sleep tonight.
