I love the idea of foreign talent, after all my ancestors were from China (supposedly) and that gives me hope of at least being a talent. So, who is regarded as foreign talent and who’s not? Remember when as Kids probably, some of us will become really peeved if our overenthuz Dad was to help us with our arts and craft... we'll resist the infringement on our individuality intially until our teachers compliments 'our' accomplishments we start to feel the induced sense of pride, for which the full impact will only surface many years later as a subconscious need authoritative subvention. WE NEED HELP OR WE CAN'T DO IT BY OURSELVES is what we have been brainwashed to think, this island mentality. Tuition and Remedire lessons...sounds only too familiar.
The line between foreign and local, it's just becoming too vague. Weren't we, Chinese immigrants forefathers, foreigners too just less than a century ago? Brazilian Rain Trees, British Pedagogy, skyscrapers built with the blood and sweat of foreigners. Even the Merlion was half African. Only when we achieve the neutered ambivalence needed to up the threashold for cultural tolerance can we achieve the 'melting pot' utopia that we could one day create.
So what is it about Superman?
He was not earthling was he? He was from Krypton. But he was our hero and our villian one hundred percent because of the things he did when he was here on earth. Who the hell cares about his Kryptonian sense of fashion? We adopt him as one of our own...because of what he did for us. Weren't we happy he is on our side?
