Curious Computer Issue

I have a curious computer issue on my computer at work.

I set the wallpaper on my computer to one of the basic wallpapers in Windows and when I came out of the control panel windows, my taskbar, windows, start menu...basically anything with selectable items on it, turned black.  Unfortunately, the text and selection highlights are also black, so I can't see what I am selecting. The only things I can see are the icons and the Windows blue bar in the log-in prompt.

I haven't been able to find anything online.  I have tried changing the wallpaper to None, changing to a different wallpaper (took some guessing to get these selections). I have also tried rebooting (several times); shutting down, unplugging everything and restarting. Nothing has worked.

Has anyone out there ever experienced anything like this?  If so, were you able to fix it and how?

Now, I rest. I just had a steel post put in the root of one of my teeth to keep it from moving. It is going to hurt after this novacaine wears off.
