Why is it that when we talk about a start we talk about the pitch count but when we talk about bringing a youngest up we talk about innings? We all know that all innings are not created equal. We have seen those 100 pitch three inning starts. Three of those are some how equal to one 90 pitch complete game when bringing a youngster up.

Now we have seen with Mark Melancon and Phil Hughes rehab this year that the Yankees are willing to give more innings to a guy who gets out of an innings with a low pitch count. So there is clearly there seems to be an idea of how many pitches a guy should be throwing in an inning but did that count as 2 innings earlier this year when Joba threw 30 plus pitches in one inning of relief.

Relief pitching tends to put more work on an arm, the getting up and down, the pitching on multiple days in a row. In relief we can easily see a 30 or 40 pitch inning. Are we looking at inning counts too much and not enough at pitch counts? Are we letting young kids throw thousands of extra pitches because they can go 150 innings this year instead of saying they can throw 2250 pitches?
