Movie Review

So I finally watched Away We Go with a friend on Saturday night.  I bought it at our Movie Gallery which was having a giant closing sale but I never got around to watching it.  My sister's always told me it was great and now I see why.

OMG, I can't believe I waited so long!  If you've never seen it do yourself a favor and rent it.  I guarentee you won't be sorry.

(Spoilers...)

The movie starts out with one of the most uncomfortable yet hillarious sequences I've ever seen.  A couple are laying in bed when the man starts to perform oral on his girlfriend.  He stops and tells her that she tastes different, she tastes fruity.  He also mentions that he remembers reading how a woman can taste different if she is menopausal or....you guessed it, pregnant.

So the couple; Verona and Burt go to visit Burt's parents and discover that his parents are planning to move to Belgium for 2 years.  The couple then decide to travel trying to find the perfect spot to raise their daughter.

They travel to Phoenix, Arizona and meet up with Verona's old boss Lily.  However the couple are quickly turned off by Lily's behavior toward her husband Lowell and her children Taylor and Ashley.  Such as when Lily says her daughter already looks and acts like a dyke and when she says her breats used to be so much larger but her children sucked her dry.

They next decide to visit Tuscon, Arizona to see Verona's sister Grace.  While out shopping for bathroom fixtures Grace tries to get Verona to talk about their deceased parents, clearly a painful subject for Verona.  The two attempt to fly to Wisconsin but are denied because they believe Verona is in her eighth month even though she tells them she is only in her sixth month.  The two are forced to take a train.  On the trian Verona listens to her daughter's heart rate and tells Burt that it is slightly below normal.  She tries to get Burt to yell at her hoping it will cause her baby's heart rate to increase.  This leads to one of the films greatest moments when Burt calls her a "cuntsucker" in front of everyone on the train.  Later that night Verona is worried about how her body will change and Burt comforts her saying he will always love her, even if he can't find her vagina.  A really amazing scene both full of heart and hillarious.

The two finally arrive in Wisconsin and visit Burt's childhood friend LN (yes that's seriously her name).  The two arrive at her house with a stroller as a gift.  LN and her husband Roderick are offended by the gift saying that she doesn't want to "push" her children away from her and it becomes clear have very different ideas about parenthood such as letting their children sleep with them and alowing them to witness their sexual escapades.  During dinner Burt gets fed up with thier radical lifestyle and calls them horrible people.  Before he leaves he takes their youngest son for a ride in the stroller before leaving with Verona.

The two decide next to visit old college friends in Montreal.  They discover their friend Tom and Munch have a very diverse family of adopted children.  Burt and Verona believe they've finally found the perfect place to raise their baby and go out to dinner sharing the news with their friends.  After dinner they end up going to a bar that is having an "amateur dance night."  Munch gets up on stage and dances for her husband and during her perfomance Tom confesses the Munch recently had her 5th miscarriage and they are unable to have children of their own.  One of the most touching moments in the film.

Burt gets a call from his brother Courtney in Miami and informs him that his wife just left him.  Verona spends time with the couple's daughter Annabelle while Burt and Courtney talk in the kitchen.  Courtney is terrified about the effects the divorce will have on his daughter.  Late at night Verona finds Burt on the trampoline calling everyone in his former sister-in-laws phonebook because he is angered that a mother would just abadon her daughter.  Verona and Burt make promises to each other that their daughter will live in a happy home.

The next morning, Verona opens up about a memory from her childhood.  Her home had a beautiful orange tree in the yard but one year it refused to bloom so her mother brought home different kinds of fruit to stick on the tree to cheer her father up.  When her father saw the tree he just stared at it for a second as if he believed all these different fruits had suddenly bloomed on the tree.  Then he burst into laughter and laughed harder then Verona had ever remembered.  Burt and Verona take one final trip to Verona's childhood home and agree they have finally found the perfect place to raise their daughter. One of the greatest love stories ever told.  I think I just found one of my top 5 movies of all time.
