Tuesday night was the Rockin Rock and Roll show in Atlanta starring Tilly and the Wall, Travis Morrison, Rilo Kiley, and Death Cab For Cutie.
My roommate Rudy and his friends(and now mine as well) Mark and Kim accompanied me(Mark drove us in his automobile) and we had a grand ol time. Despite getting to the Variety Playhouse just prior to the 8:00 starting time, we apparently missed Tilly and The Wall's set. Go figure. Anyway, no big deal, I only like one of their songs anyway.
Next up was Travis Morrison. They had technical difficulties, but soon got underway. They were a primarily synth based band. Rather dancy, but nothing too special. The highlight was a cover of one of the recent popular songs by rapper Ludicruss. Slightly annoying was the habit of the female keyboardist to partake in random booty dancing during one of their songs in which she had no playing duties. She even employed the Macarena(*gasp*). She was rather attractive, and the dancing worked during the Ludicruss song, but seemed really out of place otherwise. She thought she was being cool, but no.
And then we had Rilo Kiley, the reason the 4 of us decided to drive 4 hours each way.(All of us enjoy Death Cab, but not enough to see them alone.)
They set up their instruments(oddly Jenny did not take part in this task) and began to deliver the glorious sounds. I took lots of pictures. The lighting on some of these is pretty bad, but once I get Photoshop on this PC, I shall adjust some levels and repost them, along with some others. Some are blurry as well. Deal with it.
This was before I decided to be smart and actually use the viewfinder rather than just aiming blindly. Its also the only nearly-full band shot I got.
The lovely Jenny Lewis on guitar and lead vocals. Drummer Jason Boesal is in the background.
Blake Sennet on lead guitar duties.
Pierre "Duke" DeReeder rockin the bass guitar, and Electras t-shirt.
Jason wielding the tambourine. Yeah, this one is really dark.
Mike Bloom aka. "The Caveman" on regular and pedal steel guitars.
Jenny brings out her inner soul diva on "I Never", while trumpet and french horn player Nate Walcott(of Bright Eyes) toots his horn in the background.
For "The Execution of All Things" Jenny and Duke swapped instruments.
Blake performs "Ripchord", the only song he sung lead on. There was also an unexpected(but awesome) trumpet component added to the song.
Harmonica action on "More Adventurous"
The last song was "Does He Love You?" the best song off their new album(and possibly their best ever).
Jenny breaks a string at one point(These aren't really in chronological order, btw.).
Blake: "Anyone got an extra guitar?"
Jenny: "I'll just play without this string. P.S. I'm beautiful.(she didn't really say that part, duh.)"
Blake: "Fuck that string"
Since Death Cab was headlining RK's set was a bit shorter than I would've liked, but oh well. The set list!
Variations on a Theme: Plane Crash in C
Its a Hit
My Slumbering Heart
Love and War (11/11/46)
More Adventurous

Does He Love You?
My only (very minor) complaint is that Blake's guitar seemed a little low and thusly some of his awesome soloing was difficult to hear. Also the violin and cello players that have been playing with them for the earlier shows of the tour were absent. Overall though, it was a great show, as amazing as I knew it would be. They seemed to rock a bit harder live than on cd which was of course very good.
Well, Death Cab were up next. As they set up their equipment, the floor was getting increasingly crowded and Kim started to get claustrophobic, so we decided to head to the balcony. I knew I wouldn't get any good pictures from up there, so I didn't take any. The headliners were soon underway, and I must say I thought they were rather boring, apart from a couple songs(We Looked Like Giants, and Sound of Settling to be specific). They seem to be more of an album band than a live one(or it could very well just be too hard to follow RK). We stayed through the whole set anyway, hoping that perhaps Ben would bring Jenny back out to do some Postal Service songs. But alas, it was not meant to be. As they were doing their encore, we went out to the merch area to both purchase said merch as well as possibly run into, and converse with Jenny. We saw the other band members walking around, and I congradulated Duke on a show well played. Rudy and Kim chatted with a couple of his friends from back home until Death Cab finished their final song. We then left.
Rudy and Kim slept most of the way home, while I stayed up and chatted with Mark in order to prevent him from falling asleep at the wheel. Politics and John Titor were discussed among other things. Finally, we got back to Savannah safe and sound around 3:30ish.
Good times...
Wow, I spent over two hours writing this post. Better start on that essay now.
