I got this from the news and advance if u havnt read it yet

A 16-year-old driver’s education student from Heritage High School was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Thursday afternoon after the school car she was driving collided nearly head on with an oil company cargo van.

The student, whose named has not been released, was taken from the scene of the accident by the State Police Med Flight III emergency helicopter.

Trooper A.P. McCormick of the Virginia State Police said she was in critical condition.

McCormick said the girl’s driver’s education teacher, Kimberly Hartles, grabbed the steering wheel and hit the brake pedals on her side in an attempt to avoid the collision.

The driver’s education car was heading east on Old Rustburg Road, on the Campbell County side of Candlers Mountain, when it collided with the westbound van. The van belongs to Sterling Oil Company of Lynchburg.

“It was almost head on,” said McCormick said. “It was corner to corner.”

Both vehicles are total losses.

McCormick said the van’s driver, Cecil Dudley Silby, said the collision occurred after he swerved to miss a dog in the roadway about 3:50 p.m.

“That’s why I tell people not to swerve to miss animals,” he said. “You’ll hit a tree or someone else.”

Also injured in the accident were Hartles and Leidra Hilkson, 16, another student.

Hartles received a broken wrist and cuts and bruises. Hilkson received some minor injuries.

All three occupants of the driver education car were wearing seatbelts.

McCormick said he was withholding the name of the student driver because of the seriousness of her injuries. He said he wanted to give school officials an opportunity to tell other students before her name appeared in the media.

Thursday evening, in a news release, school officials said they will have additional personnel at the school today to help students cope with news of the accident.

“As a school community, we are saddened by this event,” said Lynchburg School Superintendent Paul McKendrick. “We are praying for all of the persons involved in the accident and we ask that the community do the same.”
