I, Admiral James Norrington, of His Majesty's Royal Navy in affiliation with the East India Trading Company hereby do submit my name for consideration in a position of high command. It is a station for which I have long prepared, and in which I have much experience. Truly there are few here who can attest to my abilities, but nevertheless I must insist that I be secured a place in command of a naval vessel with all haste. To choose otherwise would be to endanger the men and women of this draft unduly and jeopardize the success of this mission.

Insist, huh? How very forward. And here I thought you were the coy type.

There is a place for being coy. This is not that place. There is a time besides, and this is not it. Forgive me, but I must insist.

You patronize me, but no matter. My actions will speak for themselves.

Patronize you? No way.

Just trying to figure out if you're ready to slice a Third Partier's wings right off his back. It's a little different from all the usual methods. Takes longer, for one.

I am no stranger to the horrors of war.

I'm not talking horrors. I'm talking practicality. It's advice, James. Don't underestimate the time it takes to hack one of those things off.

[A sigh.]

My apologies, but at times it can be difficult to pluck the needle of meaning from the hay of your delivery. I mean no disrespect.

Your advice is most welcome.

You'll get used to it. Everyone does. Eventually.

[ the meaning-plucking or the draft-battling? who knows. ]

With your aid.

[The hay or the battles? Who knows.]

Sir, the progress of my career has been beset by unexpected occurrences, changes of fortune and people of all kinds. Tactical decisions are by their very definition dependent upon circumstances, and it would be foolish for any tactician to believe that he had accounted for all unknowns. My attainment of the rank of Admiral should negate the need for me to clarify that I am capable of the things that you seem fearful that I am not. It is not an honour bestowed lightly ( ... )

With respect, sir, you are an admiral. Why not be admiral? This is, for all purposes, a fleet, and someone should be making fleetwide choices. You're the only one of us, I think, who has done this before.

Would that it were my choice to make.

But you can make the offer. People will see reason.
