It is a perfect spring day; cool and sunny with fat, puffy clouds drifting lazily overhead. There are multicolored tents trying hard to look as they did in the Renaissance period, and people in costume everywhere doing the same. Mallory had been wanting to attend the faire since she had learned it was being moved to her town after the previous ( Read more... )

"Is there anything you can't do?"

She's sure he can probably even juggle as well as they three men currently tossing torches between each other at the center of the crowd.

He chuckles a bit. "Probably a lot of things, we just did not run into them yet."

Oh, it is likely he would: juggling is a great deal agility and hand-eye coordination.

She just shakes her head.

"Like give birth?"

She can juggle three tennis balls, but has not really pursued the matter beyond that.

"At least you have an occupation to fall back on, if the dozens of other things you do fall through."

"Like... painting." True, he can do excellent calligraphy, but not painting.

Calligraphy, flower arranging, rock gardening.

"Oh, the curio shop is more of a distraction..." Even if a very nice and neat one.

"Don't forget me...I'm a distraction."

She flutters her eyelashes playfully.

"I can paint, if it doesn't actually have to look like something."

"You are not a distraction, Mallory-chan. You are the woman I love." Her hands are held together by Ryu, between his. "You are the one who makes me whole."

She melts a little at that.

All right. she melts a lot.

"You always know what to say."

And that earns him a kiss, era breech or no era breech.

"I believe in saying the truth." It is a simple policy that kept things clear between him and those dear to him.

And of course, the whole era thing takes a secondary place when there is Mallory-kissing.

There was a time when Mallory believed that honesty was the LAST policy...what a relief to have someone love her who knows about the faeries and doesn't want to lock her in an asylum.

"That's one of the things that makes you stand out."

She squeezes his hand affectionately.

"The joust and the bard thing don't start until a little later. Shall we just stroll around and give everyone something to whisper about?"

He is a shinobi and she is okay with it.

Besides, Ryu has no reason to not believe in supernatural beings, considering his world and the strange happenings there.

"Yes, and people will soon be whispering about how lucky I am." He squeezes her hand lightly and lets Mallory pick the way they will go.

There is plenty to see. There are quieter corners where women sit at looms and demonstrate weaving, or how cooking was done so long ago. There is a makeshift blacksmith's forge where an older man in a heavy leather apron demonstrates how horseshoes are made. There are booths selling various foods, crafts and clothing, some in keeping with the period, some not.

The atmosphere is jovial and most people seem to be enjoying the day and the sedate pace of everything going on around them.

"It looks like they're setting up for a wedding." She points to an area being kept free of visitors by velvet ropes.

There is a small dais with flowers being arranged all around, and chairs being set up in rows.

Ryu observes all demonstrations curiously, making mental notes, and practicing Mallory's Japanese by asking questions through her. It is easy to stay relaxed, immersed in the atmosphere.

The roped-off area makes him smile. "A traditional European medieval wedding?"

"Why not? Weddings are supposed to be a bit like a fairy tale, aren't they? Something you'll remember forever."

It looks like this one will be a lot of fun.

"It will be impressive if they can get all of their guests to dress in keeping with the theme."

"We should watch, then. Maybe get ideas for a later time."

He is not insinuating anything, no.

"I just assumed that ours would be a traditional Japanese wedding, when the time comes. The clan leader getting married seems like it would be kind of a big deal."

No insinuation, there...in her mind, it is just a matter of time.

"Though we could have two, so that my mother and father could see us married."

"Two ceremonies. That could work very well." A simple way to make everybody happy.
