Nine Lives Season 2 Chapter 5

You strained to keep your eyes open after the initial shock set in. He kissed you, Taeyang actually kissed you. And damned as you were, this guy was a good kisser. Even though the kiss was swift and chaste, you felt like he was trying to pull you somewhere else. It was a good feeling, kind of bubbly and warm like a hot soda, but the kiss itself was sweet; was he wearing cherry chap stick? For those few moments, the shock faded and you let the pleasure absorb into the rest of you, but of course, it was only for a moment.
When he pulled away, you cursed inwardly, you had closed your eyes after all! That shock you felt earlier swiftly came back and as you looked for some help amongst your friends, you saw none were looking at you or Taeyang, they were all looking past you. Oh god, oh god, please don’t let him be there, please! You screamed in your head while you turned to face the figures standing behind you. He was there, you heart tanked to the ground. There Heechul stood, face near scarlet with his hands balled into fists. Siwon directly behind him, his own face ashen and frozen in shock, while Hangeng smirked at Heechul’s back and mumbled something in what you guessed was Mandarin. Yet Heechul seemed to hear it loud and clear, whipping back to the china man, the shorter man yanked Hangeng don’t to his level, and snarled.
“What did you say?” Heechul growled at Hangeng. Hangeng, unphased by the threatening actions, merely smiled and repeated himself in Korean.
“I said, ‘you reap what you sow’, hyung, we talked about this earlier you know. I. Told. You. So.” He then pulled himself out of Heechul’s grasped, smoothed his jacket collar, and guided the now stilled diva to the door of the cafeteria. “Siwon hyung.” Hangeng called and Siwon jerked out of his shell shock only to stumbled a bow to everyone else and with a quick glance at you before his large frame shuffled after the other two. You glazed your sights over to a now smirking Taeyang and the sight of his smug state flares something inside of you.
Without thinking or any kind of warning, you tried to sock Taeyang in the jaw. If the table wasn’t dead silent before, it certainly was now as the only thing you heard was skin against skin when your knuckles scraped the side of Taeyang’s cheek. The boy rubbed his jaw lightly and looked at you in surprise. You saw him about to speak, but you raise your eyebrows in a mock threat. Taking the hint, Taeyang clamped his mouth shut.
“I don’t know how things are run in South Korea completely, but where I come from, we don’t just smack our lips together in front of someone’s boyfriend like it’s natural!” you scold him, “Now, leave before I introduce you to how we Americans deal with people in Texas.” You glare at him, and Taeyang simply laughs it off, but it’s obvious he was shaken. Without looking back, the boy just shrugs and turns back to his original group of friends who welcomed him eagerly with laughs and what you surmised to be consolation gestures. Energy sapped by a mysterious force, you yank back a chair nearby Leetuek and fall into it, elbows on your knees and hands smothering your face. Heechul saw, and you have no idea what to do about it. If you hadn’t given in, if only you shoved him away and Heechul saw distaste for Taeyang instead of enjoyment, then your situation would be better. You let this phrase linger in your brain heavily, barely even noticing a hand rubbing small circles on your back until a pair of larger hands started kneading your shoulders. You lowered your hands and let your fingers trail lightly on top of KangIn’s before you give them a soft push off your shoulders. Giving a weak smile to Leeteuk you let a bitter and shaky laugh slip out. “What am I going to do now?” You asked the group, you looked at everyone this time, hoping they could see your need for advice. Leeteuk coughed, trying to clear his throat and you noticed everyone else’s eyes began to shift amongst each other awkwardly. “What?” you asked cautiously. You straightened a little, focusing your attention on Sungmin now. Sungmin pouted at you, knowing you picked him because he can’t keep quiet about anything for the life of him unless it involves himself. Yet you persisted, not letting the pink bunny slip because for once, you needed him to open his mouth and talk. Seeing you weren’t letting up, Sungmin sagged his shoulders and leaned forward on the table top.
“Fine. You owe me.” He opened, making sure you understood his severity, “If Heechul finds out you heard it from me, god know what he’ll do.” You nod and Zhou Mi snakes an arm around Sugmin’s waist, snuggling his nose into the other man’s neck. You could see him tense a little under the China man’s touch, but he continued anyway. “The reason why Heechul hasn’t been showing up lately, is because he’s part of the student council.”
You blink a few times, then lean toward Sungmin’s direction, “Wait, what?” you asked in disbelief. A smile unfurled and you scoff “He’s part of the student council? THE Kim Heechul that hardly bows down to anyone is in student council.” You pause, ”And that’s why he’s been avoiding me in the mornings and during lunch? Because he’s got student council? Of all the reasons, this has got to be the most-“ a sharp smack connects with the back of your head and all attention goes to Leeteuk.
The leader of the table inhales deeply, and locks his eyes with yours. “__-Sshi, if I or anyone else hears you criticize Heechul, I swear I will go Umma on you. Heechul isn’t the type to join student council willingly, yes. In fact, he was and still is humiliated to have to report to us, but don’t think that he wasn’t worried about you every time he was in the room away from you! Every morning he’d watch you wait besides that tree and if it wasn’t for our deadline and our lack of hands, he could have left. But Heechul needs this student council to stay in school, the stupid delinquent is failing most of his classes, and the Boom was kind enough to persuade the teachers to keep Heechul in school. This kids cut classes, failed them, and been held back. I’m pretty sure the only reason why he’s swallowed his troublesome and over dramatic ego is just so he can stay with you. But this,” Leeteuk gestures behind him to the YG table ”Is ridiculous. You chide him about leaving you, and now you let someone else kiss you. Have you even kissed him yet?” You struggled to hide a smile, was Leeteuk trying to help or insult Heechul? Leeteuk saw the smile though, and taken off guard, he chews his bottom lip worriedly. With a nod to him and the rest of the group, you stand and push the chair back to its original spot.
“Arasoo, I get it. I’ll go looking for him and see if I can clean my mess up.” You eye Leeteuk and laugh, picking up the elder’s intentions for his lecture. With a small wave, you make your way to the student council room. If memory served, Leeteuk had said earlier in the year that the student council room was located on the second floor. You hurried to the second floor, and did a sharp turn around the hallway, only to stumble into someone carrying a stack of notebooks. As papers and books strewn themselves on the floor, you landed backwards onto your butt and hiss at the dull pain in your butt. At first you hear the person you ran into ask if you’re alright, but stopped. Curious, you looked up and saw the familiar catty smirk of Kim Heechul. His gaze dropped from your eyes though, for reasons you didn’t know, until he spoke again.
“You’re still wearing kitty panties I see. Green’s a nice color on you.” You could feel your face turning scarlet and with a swift kick to his shin, you give him a glare.
“Yah! Kim Heechul, here I was worried to death about you and this is the thanks I get?” your leg connects to his again, this time with enough force that he took a knee to the floor and offered a hand to help you up. This time his face soften, but the smirk is still there.
“This from the girl that decided that she should let someone else kiss her right in front of me?” Heechul joked lightly. You dropped your head to the floor.
“About that, I’m sorry. I didn’t he’d do that and I just…we haven’t been together in awhile, I think I only caved because I missed you. But, why didn’t you tell me about the student council.” You could feel a stinging in your eyes, but you dared to lift your head and take his hand anyway. Once he helped you back on your feet, Heechul looked past you, biting at the insides of his cheeks. Laughing at him you reached out to pinch and drag his cheek out of his teeth’s clamp.
“Aish, that hurts!” he swatted your hand away and frowned. “It’s not my fault that you kissed him, why are you asking me stuff?” he mumbled. You put your hands on your hips and huffed mockingly.
“This boyfriend of mine, what am I going to do with him? His pride is larger than his brain.” A smile cracks in Heechul’s lips and he leans over you, nose just barely brushing against your forehead. You smile back, refusing to be intimidated or flustered and tried to meet his eyes as best you could manage.
“I don’t know, what are you going to do with me?” he whispered. You knew your ears were getting warm and as if he was magnetic, you could feel your body pulling itself into his. Once he was in range, you let your fingers curl into the folds of his jacket and nuzzle your face into his shoulder.
“Yah! Heechul! What happened to the notebooks?” you and Heechul jolted and broke apart when a tall, lanky, guy came out of the student council room and stomped to the mess on the floor. Not even bothering to push up his thick black frames, the boy begins to collect the clutter. His small face furrowed with concern as he scrambles, the boy mutters something. Then, he looked up at Heechul and frowned. “You know Changmin spent so much time organizing these, if he finds out you dropped them , he’s going to raise hell.” The man cautions while he collects the last of the leaflets and makes his way to the notebooks. Heechul rolled his eyes and beat the other man to a notebook, hapharzdly tossing it to him and repeating the prcess with any notebook he could grab.
“I’ll care about his opinion when he finally lets me wear what I want.” The diva said as he threw the last notebook to the teen with glasses. The man fumbled the notebook and it landed at your feet. You made to pick it up, only to brush hands with him after he dove to catch it. Following the hand up to the face of it’s owner, you had to admit, underneath those frames whoever this nerd was, he was good looking. It was adorable seeing him freeze and turn red at the sudden contact, but nevertheless, you picked up the notebook and handed it to the man.
As soon as that notebook left your hand, you felt a tug around your waist and soon you were facing a wall on Heechul’s right side with his arms protectively around you. “Don't even think about it Yunho, she’s mine and I’ve already got one guy trying to take her. I’m even gonna let you have the chance.” Heechul snapped. You giggled at his sudden overprotective attitude and rapped your knuckles lighty on his head.
“Yah, Kim Heechul, play nice with other people.” You teased and as best as you could, you bowed awkwardly to the one named Yunho. “I’m sorry, normally he’s less mean but more bitchy, I’m __-sshi.” You extended a hand out to Yunho after he stood up and straightened the books and papers. Yunho raised an eyebrow and looked from Heechul to you.
“So you’re the girl that he’s been watching every morning? I thought he was just being a stalker.” The nerd admitted. You laughed when Heechul frowned at Yunho.
“Who’s the stalker, Mr. Suck Up? Everything you do is just so Changmin can magically fall for you one day. Sorry to break it to you, but fairy tales don’t happen like that. You want something you take it.” Yunho’s face turned red and he tried to hit Heechul in the arm, forgetting he was holding a heavy load on his arm.
“Yunho! What are you doing?” A voice called form the room, Yunho whipped around, face tinged in the cheeks and Heechul merely tsked before dragging you down the hallway. “Kim Heechul! Where do you think you’re going with that girl? You still need to take these down to the teacher’s office.” The voice called after you two. Heechul looked over his shoulder as whe was walking and gave the man a wave.
“I’ll do it lat-ow!” He rubbed the top of his head and looked at you in surprise. “What was that for?!” Choosing against answering, you wriggled your way from Heechul’s grasp and walked back to the man calling after him and Yunho.
“I’m sorry for his behavior, I’ll be taking those.” You said calmly as you grab the huge stack from Yunho. Making your way back to Heechul, you slam half of the stack into Heechul’s hands and balance yours in one hand to snap your fingers at him. “Heel.” You said and smirked at him. Closing his mouth, Heechul followed behind you like you asked.
Finally, school finished and you stretched your neck at an unnatural angle, hoping to crack it. The class seemed to run longer than usual, maybe because of the inability to pass the time with notes between you and Siwon, but the fact didn't seem to discourage you. You glanced at the front corner of the room and bit your pen cap with excitement. There, sat Heechul, uniform actually abiding by the school rules and his face taught with concentration as he was working on what you guessed was homework. You let the image of him being studious sink in, testing the idea of liking him this way.
A slam on your desk makes you jump and you let out a small shriek. While you tried to recover from the shock you look up at the offender’s sly smile. Uh oh, Sungmin was giving you a weird smile, one very similar to his ‘Do you have any gossip for me’ smiles, but this one seemed a bit more greasy. You leaned backwards into your chair and glanced around the room for any sign of Zhou Mi.
“Um. Hi.”
The pink boy snatched a chair behind him and in one swift motion turned it to sit down and leaned in.
“So.” He stared at you expectantly, smirk still on his face.
“’So’, what?” you parroted back at him.
“Fix things with the diva from Armani hell yet?”
“If by fix you mean did I finally kiss him, no.” you saw the smirk fall and a small feeling of triumph flew through you. “Why do you ask?” Sungmin now shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“We all made a bet on when you would. And I said less than a day. Mi’s right, I really must have high expectations for romance.” He sighed and slumped his head on his arms in defeat. You shook your head at Sungmin and shrugged. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to surprise you they would do that.
“Only because you watch too many Disney movies, Min.” a smooth voice comes from behind, you see arms wrap around Sungmin’s waist and the pink man delivered a kiss to Zhou Mi’s cheek, which was promptly followed by more snuggling, and more kissing, and just more everything. Finally tired of watching the couple going at what you had yet to accomplish, you pretended to make an audible gagging noise and a face at the two. Sungmin broke away from a lip lock he was in only to stick his tongue out at you before going back to Zhou Mi. You awkwardly tried to scoot back into your chair, but it wouldn’t go any further. Caught between a rock and a hard place, you averted your attention to Siwon, hoping by some strange and sudden telepathy he’d pull you out of this mess.
Whatever you did, it worked. Almost instantly, a large hand shooed the couple away and off of your desk. Happy to be freed, you smiled up at the savior, never more thankful in your life to see the God-loving teen. “Hey.” He said gently, coaxing you to get out of your seat. Siwon grabbed your bag as you stood up, and helped it slide onto your shoulder. “I think you need to talk to Sungmin about someone.” He looked around cautiously, hoping no one else could hear him. “Kyuhyun found out about Zhou Mi, and he’s not happy about it at all.” Oh. Kyuhyun’s name clicked into your mind, and your shoulders sagged, finally recalling the junior that you tried so hard to arrange a date for with his high school crush. Of course his crush’s ex boyfriend has to come back from China right when they go on a date. Of course.
