I hope no one's too sick. That curse, yesterday, seemed to catch a lot of people when they were feeling terrible about themselves a little bit off-guard ( Read more... )

You know, I've been told that people can sometimes exchange memories for something else with the 'deities'.

I heard that too.

It's a little bit distressing.

It is, indeed. Although at least it seems a voluntary surrendering of those memories.

I don't intend to take them up on that offer.

Well, even then...what if that's the memory that makes you...compassionate? Or what if it's the one that reminds you how important your family is, or was?

I don't know if people can see the consequences of losing a memory.

Yes, and I've seen more than a few complicated situations thanks to those losses. I don't think people quite realise the consequences.

I don't know. It if were up to me, my memory means much more than my life.

It means that much to you? Little as I'd want to give up my memories, I'm not sure I'd value them more than my life.

Yes, it means that much. I'm not sure why.

I guess that varies from person to person. Memory, and all.

Yes, I think it must vary from person to person. Though there are some memories I'd never part with, I know that.

Those would be the memories that people want you to part with.

No one wants memories of you eating breakfast, I mean.

Yes, I understand what you mean.

Either way.

I think memory and personality are linked, I guess is what I'm trying to say. I'd rather be myself than just be alive. If I didn't have my memory, I don't know if I would be the same person.

Though you might not remember the kind of person you were before. And where would you be then?

malleableworld March 18 2009, 23:00:09 UTC
Well, but who I would turn into would be a lie. Even if I didn't remember it.

It doesn't seem as though you'd be a lie to me. It would only be a change. That which you'd done--giving up a memory, for example--would be because of your temperament. Whatever you became, even not remembering something, would still be yourself.

It seems to me that it's more like creating a new memory than the sort of loss you see it to be.

Well, I can see your point.

I just don't like the idea, of my memory changing.
