So, hey, quick question.

What year is it where all of you guys are and what's going on in your world? I mean, woah, okay, not to be nosy but if you want to say, then I'd like to hear.

World War Three? Are you serious!? [ jubilee, that's rude. she shuts her jaw. that was in the narrowly avoided near future, wasn't it? ] Sorry - just, oh man.

Deadly serious.

Only lasted two weeks, though. Came to a halt early due to some...weird shit. Neither side really cared about fighting at the end, I can tell you that.

Well, I guess that's... good. [ scary as all hell, but good. ]

[ ... ] Was it between countries, or... humans and mutants?

Mutants? What the fuck do you mean by that?

Russia, Italy, and France were the main countries on one side and Academy City and England were the main countries on the other. Both of them harassed Elizarina, though.

[ that reaction isn't a particularly good one - but it's reassuring, in it's own strange way. ] That's kind of a long story. [ she'll explain later. people here seem more open minded - she hasn't seen anyone harassing kurt for the way he looks or any negative reaction to her powers, so it's not like she wants to hide. ]

I've never heard of Academy City before. We must be from really different worlds... or you're way in the future.

[He gives a year--it's not too far into the future from 2012.]

Academy City is a self-governing, fucked up city in Japan where people send their unsuspecting children to have their brains modified so they can develop a power and basically be at the whim of a bunch of psychopaths.

[ and she stares. that's... that's beyond words. ] That's awful! They're experimenting on kids and turning them into mutants?!

I don't know what you mean by a mutant, but we're Espers.

Most children want to become Espers. Beg their parents to let them go stay in the city and try to develop an ability. Experimentation on kids with families isn't so bad--they'd have to explain themselves, after all, but they're pretty good at cover-ups. It's the orphans who get the really horrible shit. They call us "Child Errors"--basically, a lot of parents fucking dump their kids in the city, maybe thinking they're not horrible for it because they'll have a good life in a place so modern and advanced. What they don't realize is the kid becomes government property and they can do whatever the fuck they want to them without worry.

[ orphans. government property. all of these are ringing awful, awful warning bells in her head and thoughts of a future that almost could have been. if the x-men hadn't come... ] I'm sorry.

It's a fucked up reality, but at least before I left it I did something to improve the craphole. No more blackmailing people with useful powers into doing their dirty work by kidnapping people they care about or anything fucked up like that going on.

That's good.

[ a beat. ] That sounds a little too much like how my world could pan out than I want to admit, actually.

Oh? So mutants are like Espers, then?

We're like... natural born espers, I guess. But our world isn't very fond of us.

Oh? That's unfortunate.

[He sounds...oddly bored. But that's kind of his default.]

There are groups that aren't very fond of Espers but...it's just the bastards that couldn't develop an ability. Mostly they're just a minor annoyance.

So non-espers are less common than actual espers?
