Author’s Notes: My day was for crap. I wrote some fluff. For and inspired by my best girl.

It was three am, and Santana was still at her desk, writing her goddamn paper. Majoring in English as a track to get into law school was clearly a ridiculous idea. Analyzing literature was not her strong suit, but here she was, writing a paper on the imagery used in The Scarlet Letter. She rubbed her eyes and sighed. Three more pages. Three more pages, and she would be done, and she could crawl into bed beside Brittany and sleep for a few short, blissful hours before her first class. As she settled her hands over her keyboard again, ready to forge ahead, she felt a soft thud beside her legs and, suppressing the urge to shriek, looked down.

“Jesus Christ. What are you doing?” she demanded, but Brittany just smiled guilelessly up at her.

“Keeping you company,” she yawned, resting her head on Santana’s leg. She had something in her hands, but Santana couldn’t see what it was.

“Britt,” Santana sighed.

“Shush. Keep writing. I won’t bother you. I just don’t want you to be alone.”

“You’re cute,” Santana smirked, and she bent to kiss her girlfriend’s head before resigning herself to her fate.

After she’d written another page, she checked on Brittany, thinking she might have fallen asleep, because she hadn’t made any noise since she’d settled next to her legs, half under her desk. “Hi,” Brittany said, grinning up at her.

“Hi,” Santana laughed, and she reached down to smooth tousled blonde hair. “What’re you doin’?”

Brittany solemnly placed something on Santana’s knee. Curious, Santana picked it up and examined it in the light of her laptop. It was a paper crane, and Santana, frustrated and exhausted as she was, laughed delightedly. “If you pull on its tail, its wings flap,” Brittany told her helpfully, so she did, and that simple thing cheered her up more than almost anything could have. For a few more moments, she played with the crane. Then she set it on her desk and smiled down at Brittany.

“Go to bed, babe,” she urged. “I’m almost done.”

“Good,” Brittany said, trying to stifle a yawn. “Then we can both go to bed.” She rested her head against Santana’s leg again and took a piece of paper from the stack next to the desk.

“I love you,” Santana murmured, forcing herself to go back to her paper.

“I love you, too,” Brittany returned brightly.

When she’d finished another page, Brittany presented her with another origami animal. “It’s a squid, see?” she said proudly, and Santana giggled.

“How’d you know this was exactly what I wanted?” she asked, and Brittany laughed.

“Because we’ve been best friends since we were four. Duh,” she answered.

Santana put the squid next to the crane, bent and kissed Brittany’s head again, and returned to her paper. When she got stuck just before her conclusion, she almost punched the desk in frustration, but her eyes fell on the animals Brittany had made, and she felt soothed. Brittany reached for her hand and gently played with her fingers. “Stuck, babe?” she asked sweetly, as Santana re-read the last paragraph she’d written.

“Mmm,” she replied absently.

After a few more seconds, Brittany dropped her hand, and Santana sighed and went back to her paper. Just as she was ready to actually start the end of this beast, she felt another light weight on her knee, and she looked down. “It’s a frog,” Brittany said, with a half smile, and Santana chortled and picked it up. “Look, put it down and push on his back.”

Santana did as she was told, and the paper frog made a clumsy leap, which, combined with the late hour, had Santana almost in tears with laughter. “This is exactly what I needed to finish this thing,” she told her girlfriend, and Brittany’s tired eyes lit up.

She set the frog beside the other two animals and pounded out her conclusion in five minutes. Then there was nothing to do but read it over for mistakes. She chanced a look down at Brittany, and the other girl was almost asleep, head heavy against Santana’s leg. Proofreading could wait till the morning.

“Come on, you. I’m done,” she said quietly, carefully pushing Brittany off her leg.

“Really?” Brittany yawned, stretching her arms above her head.

“Really,” Santana said, and Brittany grinned. “I couldn’t have finished it without you,” she whispered, as they fell into bed.

Brittany wormed her away into Santana’s arms, pillowing her head on her girlfriend’s chest. “I know,” she said slyly, and Santana would have laughed fondly, but she was already asleep.
