It's the Dexcon 14 Recap Post

Jul 14, 2011 17:03

If I only post in my LJ a few times a year, my recaps on what I did at Dexcon are well worth the wait.
So without further ado here's my recap of Dexcon 14.
The names of the events I played in are in bold

Thursday

I woke up early on Thursday to catch a train that got me into Morristown just a bit after noon.
After picking up my badge I lugged my bag along and checked out if there was anything that caught my interest for the day since the events I had pre-registered for were for Friday and Saturday.
I didn't pick anything for the afternoon since I was more concerned in finding crash space for the con which I was able to get later in the day.
After spending most of the afternoon hunting for crash space and meeting up with my friends I got something to eat, played some Rock Band 3 and got ready to play in a Buffy Tabletop game.

Buffy: Under Pressure
For the game I played a magic addicted witch with a bit of a snarky attitude who was under house arrest after a failed scouting mission by some of the other members of the crew (the scouting mission was played earlier in the day) after watching a visiting slayer kick a soul having vamp in the groin we got to zap some very nasty giant slug monsters before she had to fall back due to magic overuse (nosebleeds tend to be a clue that you're going overboard with the power usage) but the evil was found out and no one got killed by the slugs...or each other.

Once the game was over I decided to get some sleep instead of playing some changeling which turned out to be a great choice in part to what was on tap for...

Friday

After waking up, taking a shower and getting something to drink it was time to play in my first event of the day.

Firefly LARP: Guild-y Pleasures
This years game based in the Firefly universe was set at the retirement party of the Grand Abbess of the companion's guild where I played Dana Cho, High Priestess of the Fire Sphere.
My main goal was being able to deliver a plant that is considered contraband in the area and give it to the retiring Abbess which I was able to but the one who I had paid to get said banned plant wanted me to make sure someone else was chosen as the new Grand Abbess instead of the one that was going to be picked.
Doing the whole "wait and see" method of diplomacy I looked as I was on the fence and when the new Abbess was announced everyone was surprised...even the rest of the council.
Everyone was happy with the choice and no one got killed.

After getting changed and putting some of my things away I headed down for the next thing on my list.

Knight Realms: Boffer Combat 101
I checked out a boffer 101 class along with Andrea and Shoshanna and it was quite interesting plus it could be helpful for future possible gaming but it ended early so I took a trip to the local burger king for some food and picked up some soda for me and a bottle of water for Shanna and just chilled on out until I was called in to begin the final preparation for the event that helped me get in for free.

Game of Thrones: Eye of the Storm
This was the game I was helping Evil John and Crystal run and I had a blast in running around and not only helping out but in playing my NPC that I had been given.
The game went quite well and there have been calls for another one and some of the things that went down in the game just made me shake my head and laugh, like the character Aaron was playing getting drugged into sleeping with a "witch" character, something that had also happened in the playtest of the game only Aaron was playing a different character at that time.
Also the fact that a perfect plan to start a coup was undone when the soldiers sent to capture the target prince stayed loyal to him and helped him escape to set up the war to be that would come from the events of the evening.

Once game was called I hung out down in the lobby for a bit before calling it a night because I had a busy day ahead of me and I wanted to be well rested for the grind that was...

Saturday

Woke up early again to be ready for something that everyone had been telling me to check out so I had decided to start my Saturday with...

Dystopia Rising: "Push Forward to Coney Island"
My first exposure to Dystopia was the 60XP and under mod that they were running at Dexcon.
I couldn't make the 30XP and under mod due to it being run at the same time as Game of Thrones and the Sat. night mod was...lets just say it wouldn't be good for someone who hadn't played before so this was the time for me.
Before things kicked off I quickly made a character while skimming through the rules and after 5 min. came up with Griffon "Griff" Church, Yorker Sawbone.
Sawbones are pretty much field medics and I was just fine with that as we began with a couple waves of zeds (DR slang for zombies) attacking to start the show while I hung out in the back with the other healers until things had died down a bit and we had set up a fallback point.
While most of the fighters started to press ahead I stuck to the back to help in stabilizing the wounded pulled back from the frontlines and getting them patched up enough to head back to help out.
Even though I didn't attack anything I absolutely loved the game and I think I'm gonna go to a full event sometime in the near future.

Once things were done I picked up some food from the staff suite and played some Dance Central before looking for something to do for the afternoon and after checking out the big board I picked...

Cthulhu Live: The Lotus People
I decided to play in a Cthulhu Live game in the afternoon where I played Ottama, a priest of a local native tribe of cannibals who had integrated with a local brotherhood of monks.
He was a servant to the matron who was the go-between of the locals and the monks and had an interesting time following a stranger from" the future" who talked funny, looked darker and talked of gym, tan and laundry (i kid you not, one of the characters in the game was a thrown back in time "The Situation" from Jersey Shore)
Things really got interesting as the Germans who had come to the temple looking for ways to make the nazi's stronger in their attempt to rule the world started to fall one by one and my character was tricked into starting a spell that was in fact draining the power of an avatar of a deity his tribe worshiped so he ended the spell and started to move off to tell the others of his tribe of the betrayal of the brotherhood but then all hell broke loose and the anti-climatic ending that was pretty much "rocks fall, everyone dies" and thus kinda a blah ending.

Once that was over I decided to pick up something to drink and picked up some Coldstone ice cream as a snack to go with some burgers and fries and got ready for the nighttime event I had picked but before the game started I was able to arrange a ride back into the city later on in the night but I did have time to play in my final event for the night

Shattered Legacy: The Fall of the Ivory Tower
For the OWoD vampire game I played a non-descript Malkavian who had come along to celebrate the deathday of one of the major players of the Camarilla but it turned into a prep for an attack on the Sabbat.
And then things got really odd when a spirit that wasn't a spirit was messing around with most there and it turned out to be an elder of the Giovanni clan who had no knowledge of the Cam, The Sabbat or the Tremere (yep, the NPC was that old) so we went off to stop some evil wraith from causing some serious trouble.
Now It was getting close to when I had to catch my ride back into town so I talked to Warren M. who was helping run this game that I would "take the hit" to help move the story along and to take my character "out of play" for the rest of the game and let me head out and back home.

Overall Dexcon was once again great and for being the only con I'm going to this year it didn't disappoint.
My next con with most likely be Dreamation in Feb, Lets hope it's just as good as Dexcon

role playing games, larp, rock band, zombies, vampires, dexcon
