I was just reading an
article about pollution in China, and this bit really got to me:
Liu wears a small green cap and an oversize pair of sunglasses. "We are a developing country," he says. "We aren't yet in the position to take on international obligations." Beijing has signed the Kyoto Protocol -- which aims to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide by 2012 -- but as a developing nation, China is not obligated to make cuts.
Excuse me?
NEW RULE:
If you have nuclear bombs, you are not allowed to call yourself a "developing nation," or get any special treatment in that regard.
I don't care if you're India or Pakistan, either. And don't even get me started on North Korea. Get your priorities straight, people. Let's start with drinking water. What's more important? Nuclear bombs or drinking water? I shouldn't even have to ask this question. But how many man hours did these scientists put into bombs, and how much money did these nations spend on them? Just think what could have been accomplished with all that money and science! But NO.
No, sorry, China, not cutting you any breaks, here. You don't get to send a man into space, and then claim you're a "developing nation." The only thing you're developing is a dire lack of perspective.
