For all his "Fiery Rhetoric", a term so widely used to describe him throughout AP and Reuters reports, Ahmadinejad (the Iranian President) has made a point that I can't help but nod my head to. 'Fiery Rhetoric' is more a euphemism for 'unhinged, deranged ranting' than anything else. Which you likely know, but still. It should be pointed out.

Also: there are recent, historically relevant reasons why the US and Iran aren't likely to open communication. The 1953 "revolution" secretly-openly supported by the US, (overthrowing Mossadeq and installing Reza Shah Pahlavi) led to the 1979 hostage crisis. The hostage crisis led to the Iran-Contra debacle. Since then, even after Mohammed Khatami's election in 1997, Iranian and US leadership haven't bothered talking to each other. Given the track record of the US in Iran, maybe that's a good thing. After all, Iran's civilian population still has a favorable view of America, no matter what their corrupt theocracy does. Best not to fuck that up, now.

The 18 page letter Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently sent to George Bush is just weird. It doesn't address any issues on the table, even. Anyway, Ahmadinejad bringing up nuclear power now is a bit of a joke - European allies of Iran had ( ... )
