My general impression is that PhD programs are generally aimed at very technical or academic careers, while masters programs are more about developing a specific set of practical skills. I have also heard that PhD programs tend to offer more funding, though I’m sure this varies significantly by field. You’d be giving more back in terms of research or teaching or whatever, and there just aren’t as many PhD students. So in some cases it might be more feasible financially, even though it’s more time.

I’ve also gotten the distinct impression that PhD programs are not for everyone, and that you should only do one if you’re really really convinced it’s something you want to do. So don’t let anyone else talk you into it-you should decide for yourself whether you really love your field enough to live and breathe it for four or five years. Or, alternatively, whether the stress and late nights are worth it to get where you want to go afterward.

I didn’t comment on your other post, but it was good to hear what you’ve been up to. I am also Bad At Livejournal, but I love reading what people (especially Alpha people!) are doing with their lives. Hope your new directions and new prospects prove fruitful!
