John let them in using his old key. He seemed surprised it still worked.

Sherlock wasn’t.

He put his hand on John’s shoulder. “You can still change your mind.”

“You already said you’d take the case.”

“Mary isn’t a case. She’s your wife.”

John shook his head dismissively. “She’s a stranger.”

“Sooner or later, all married people realize they’ve given their lives to strangers. Why do you think the divorce rate is so high?”

“I’ll grant you that, but how many people find out their particular stranger also happens to be a trained assassin?”

“Speaking of which, mind the tripwire.”
