Previous Journal Entry #3 - The INTERESTING One

It's been an interesting week.

Actually, that doesn't begin to cover it. Obviously, we survived the fight with the octo-lich (seriously, he had an octopus for a head!). I had my usual effectiveness in battle; I was mind-controlled for a short time and ran in circles. Hey, at least there weren't any pits to fall in. And I killed a slaad (one out of five). That was nice.

That fight went really quick. I guess it had to, one way or another. Apparently, I missed a lot of it, but I did see Wahid blink out of existence once, for a second. He was trying to heal me and I guess the magic went wonky. When he (He? ...there's a thought) reappeared, he was...different. Larger, for one thing. Also, much brighter (I did write before about how he glowed).

The part I missed before that was how he had used the lich as a bouncing ball, after ripping his leg off (the lich's leg, not Wahid's, of course). That must've been fun.

After doing that a few times, the lich teleported away, Wahid healed me up, and then Garreth was able to use the lich-leg to locate the guy. Wahid teleported us over there (that should've tipped me off), and we were dumped in a room full of treasure and traps.

Some of us were pretty beaten up by the arrows, and Daelric was acting kind of weird, but the lich ended up getting stuck in his own mirror trap. Garreth disarmed the traps and we looked around for that thing the lich's soul was in. Various objects were broken and set on fire, and eventually the falla-thingy was found and given to the vampire. Phew. Finally. Good for us.

We went back to the keep and stopped there for a bit, then we pressed on to the portal we found in the desert. We brought the older warrior that had been with us for the lich fight. He no longer wanted to stay in...wherever we were. I can't believe I already forgot the name of the land. Anyway, we managed to get through that portal and back into Faerun. We were quite a ways south of where we started out, so we chartered a boat and sailed for Baldur's Gate.

Daelric decided to part with us then, because he had had enough. He left to investigate a ship full of orcs, and then Wahid told us he was gone. Not dead, just decided to go home. It was too bad to see him go, but I can understand his feelings. We were pretty lucky to have survived that fight with the lich, and afterwards we were all pretty rich (I didn't really want to take my part, due to my poor fighting, but I did spend it on weapons, armor and mounts- useful stuff, at least). I hope he has a long, happy life.

Back to us. It was on the ship that I found out. I noticed the waves acting weird, and I saw Garreth speaking with Wahid; he looked concerned, so I asked him what was going on. He sent me to Wahid, so I asked him what the deal was. He told me that he had become a god. I thought that maybe the last fight had just knocked him completely off his rocker (now that I think of it...). But Garreth had looked so serious that I just had to ask him about it. He said that, yes, he believed Wahid was a god.

I think that was the point where my mind froze. I believed Garreth, because he was obviously a pretty powerful follower of Tymora. I figured he knew about those things. I don't (er, didn't) know anything about religion, but I didn't think it was possible for someone to just 'become' a god. Like they were 'becoming' a shop owner or a tailor.

I focused on training for the task at hand. We weren't quite sure what that was yet, but we knew it had to do with the scrolls that Garreth had been carrying since we had met. We needed to take them to a temple of Tymora. It concerned a matter of great importance, but that was all we knew. I also practiced my writing, which is why I'm so chatty all of a sudden (did I mention I also learned how to use parentheses?...and ellipses?).

The high priest of the temple nearly fell over backwards when he saw Wahid. That confirmed my thoughts, and was also very amusing. He took the scrolls and then had us run over to the temple of Mystra. The priest there...well, Garreth had to punch him in the kneecaps before he'd take his eyes off Wahid.

During all this, we found out that orcs had been massing outside the walls of Baldur's Gate. Apparently, they were very well organized and they all wore similar colors. Very odd. We found this out from a paladin of Mystra who had been watching the city. He had been waiting for us, apparently...or the scrolls, at least.

The scrolls told us to go to Cormyr, that something bad was going on there. Since we were so late, it had probably already happened, in which case we needed to get there right away. I thought that maybe we should help Baldur's Gate first, if thousands of orcs were going to attack it soon. Still, we decided to leave for Cormyr, and I'm glad we did.

We bought a few things before we left. I got some celestial armor, and its really great stuff (although I have to get it fixed now...). I can actually move in it. I also got some really great holy longswords. We bought a griffon and a pegasus, and made the Mystra Paladin's horse (which was huge, by the way) faster. Garreth already had a magic carpet and Wahid...well, he didn't need any help.

I took the griffon, but he wanted to eat the pegasus, so we handed it off to Wolfgar. I took the pegasus, and I should really give the poor guy a name. Maybe he has one already...I should've asked the dealer. Oh, well. When we left the city, we saw that there weren't thousands of orcs, but there were a few. I felt a lot better about leaving.

That didn't last too long, though. The first city we came across...it was gone. Everything and everybody was dead and smoldering. Before any of that had a chance to register, Wahid zipped off. We followed slowly behind him, not sure what he found. Apparently, two orcs had been left behind to watch the area. When we got there, they were completely surrounded by bushes and they were trying to hack their way out.

Oh, boy...here comes the embarassing part.

Wolfgar was getting pretty upset- I guess he's not a big fan of orcs (really, though, who is?). He looked like he really wanted to stomp them into the ground. After what I'd seen, I agreed with him. I have to admit that I was also itching to try out my new swords.

Wahid was talking to the orcs, I think. I don't know what language they speak, so I couldn't tell what they were saying. After about a minute, he stopped talking to them and told us to subdue them. The bushes disappeared.

Wolfgar dropped his sword and CHARGED the orcs. He DROPPED his sword. What in the hells did he do that for? He also put himself in a position where the orcs could both hit him pretty easy. And they did. He was looking pretty bad, so I ran up to help him. I completely forgot about the subduing thing (sorry about that), and just hacked at the closest orc I could get to. Messed it up pretty bad, too, but it didn't go down.

In the next second, Wolfgar drew his ax, destroyed both the orcs, and then....um...hit me. Acutally, he didn't just hit me, he ripped me in half. I was so surprised that I just stood there and took it. Later, people told me that all that was left of me was a pile of goo.

There's not going to be any good way to describe the next part, so just bear with me. I don't remember much about what happened, but I do remember talking to Wahid. I don't even know how, I just was. He asked me if I wanted to come back. Of course I did- I wasn't done yet. Then he asked me if I would consider a career change. It took me a second before I realized what he meant by that.

That was another easy question. Even before the God thing, he had a unique perspective on things that I appreciated, and his abilities were amazing. I had been planning on trying to help him with what I could anyway. It's just...well, how do you bring that topic up? "Hey, I know we're busy fighting an unforseeable evil and all, but...mind if I join your holy gang? You seem like a cool guy."

So he didn't actually have to resurrect me in order to get me to sign up, but that certainly sped up the process. Now that I'm here, I know this is what I was meant to do with my life. I mean, yeah I worshipped Tymora, but that was for two reasons: a) I didn't want to end up on the Wall after I died, and b) I wanted to make my parents angry by worshipping someone other than Gond. And no offense to Tymora- she's a great goddess (I've certainly heard good things). It's just that wasn't really for me.

I see why I never did well with my family now. They wanted everything to line up neatly, with one gear pushing another, which gives it this much extra boost and causes the water to move a certain way... My father once said that he wished everyone worked like that- little clockwork parts that all slid neatly together, and no matter what happened, they would just keep going. That just struck me, because its so...cold. What if someone had to change for some reason? Furthermore, why is it good to just do the same thing over and over again? Shouldn't one want to go out and see the world and find out what things are in it?

It just wasn't meant to work. I would've never been happy in Urmlaspyr, even if I was a wild success at running the silk business (ha). But before I met Wahid, I had no purpose. I was just wandering, hoping I'd find what I wanted to do with my life somewhere out there. Hey, look, I did. This should be fun...well, mostly.

Unfortunately, we have some pressing matters at the moment. We've come across more destroyed towns (we haven't even had time to bury all the bodies). I don't even know if Urmlaspyr exists now. The town I talked about before- there were thousands and thousands of people dead, and it lies farther from Cormyr than my hometown. Hopefully, the place is big enough that the orcs didn't attack it. Hopefully, everyone there is safe. Hopefully, the orcs headed west instead of-

No, I don't mean that. Believe me, we've seen enough carnage. I don't want to wish that on other people to spare my family. It's just...I left home with a curse on my tongue. I didn't properly say goodbye to anyone in my family. The last thing they got from me was an argument. It was childish and stupid, and now I may never get the chance to tell them I'm sorry. I suppose I'll just have to see what I can do when we make it over to Cormyr.

It sounds like the rise of organized orcs has something to do with the 'dead' god Bane. Wahid went back to check on Baldur's Gate a few days ago. It sounds like the orcs just ignored that city and started moving south, so he helped the city in their path prepare. He got back last night while I was sleeping.

Wolfgar's converted, and probably mostly out of guilt. Wahid asked him, and it sounds like he didn't take too much convincing. Why didn't I think of asking Wolfgar? I mean, that's really supposed to be my job- Wahid has more important things to deal with, I'm sure.

Oh, well. That's just another thing to work on. It's all a little new still.
