It was a long Winter this year. The groundhog predicted six more weeks of it, and even he underestimated. March crawled by, cold and grey, teasing us with a few scattered hours of sunshine. While the neighborhood hid inside, huddled around televisions, consuming the predictable "madness" of college basketball, I stood on my porch and tried to pretend that the breeze was warming, not biting. Spring finally crept in, its own April Fool, starting the growing season with little rain and lots of wind. That must be why I came out the other day and found all of this in my yard. Something this strange, you almost have to blame the weather. Like a shower of frogs: we have to believe a tornado pulled them from their comfortable swamp and then just let go. It must just be an unlikely coincidence with rare results. There are no more miracles, just unexplained phenomena. But a whole front lawn full of ginger? I don't think I ever planted ginger. I'm not sure I would know how to grow it, but here it is. I guess I'd better learn quick. I can't complain though. It's worse for my neighbor. He's got a half acre of wasabi.
